Taruho is a loyal servant of Shion who uses the Shadow Mirror Body Transfer Jutsu to create a decoy of her. During an ambush, this jutsu makes it appear that Shion has been killed, misleading the pursuing assassins. The real Shion continues the mission disguised, allowing the team to progress toward the temple.

This deception is revealed mid-mission when Neji instructs Naruto to escort the real Shion to safety.

Yomi manipulates Shion into beginning the sealing ritual while he is still inside the barrier. This allows Mōryō's spirit to reunite with his original body, which Yomi had been serving as a temporary vessel. Without this trick, Mōryō would have been successfully sealed and unable to revive.

Yomi's deception during the ritual directly leads to the climactic battle where Naruto must stop Mōryō's full resurrection.

At the climax, Shion attempts to sacrifice herself and Mōryō to save Naruto by using her bell to alter his fate. Naruto stops her and draws on her chakra to create a massive Rasengan. He drives this spiraling sphere of energy directly into Mōryō's body, obliterating the demon entirely.

In the final scene, Shion asks Naruto if he will help her continue the lineage of priestesses who fight demons. Mōryō is an ancient demon who seeks to conquer the world and establish a Thousand Year Kingdom. He exists as a spirit without a physical body and requires a host to manifest. The film reveals that Mōryō emerged from humanity's darkest thoughts, meaning demons are born from collective human negativity and malice.

Shion explains at the end that another demon will inevitably arise because humanity's darkness continues to create such threats.

Yomi dispatches four subordinates to eliminate Shion before she can seal Mōryō. To amplify their strength, Yomi grants each assassin command over a chakra beast, powerful creatures that enhance their combat abilities. These four warriors lead the ambushes against Naruto's team on the road to the shrine.

Sakura, Rock Lee, and Neji must fight these assassins while escorting Shion, creating the mid-mission action sequences.
