During the early months of World II a German U‑boat is sunk in Hudson Bay. Lieutenant Hirth leads a small crew of German soldiers northward, hoping to slip across the still‑neutral U.S. border. Along the frozen wilderness they encounter a French‑Canadian trapper, a Hutterite community leader, an author named Philip and a soldier, Andy Brock, each playing a role in the desperate chase.
