Matt Sullivan, portrayed by Josh Hartnett, lives in San Francisco with his roommate Ryan. He is an employee at a dot-com company but is haunted by thoughts of his ex-girlfriend, Nicole, which disrupts his life.

Struggling with obsessive thoughts related to Nicole, Matt experiences sexual dysfunction. He confides his challenges to his brother John, a Catholic priest-in-training, revealing the depths of his emotional turmoil.

In an effort to move on, Matt goes on a date with Susie, but his attempt at intimacy goes comically wrong when he tries to fake an orgasm. This incident highlights his inability to connect with others while fixated on Nicole.

Matt learns that Nicole is engaged to someone she met in France, which intensifies his emotional struggle. This revelation prompts him to take drastic measures to regain control over his life.

At a laundromat, Matt encounters Erica, played by Shannyn Sossamon. Despite his struggles to initiate conversation, they feel an unexpected connection, complicating Matt's vow of abstinence.

Unbeknownst to Matt, his friends and coworkers start an office pool, betting on how long he can withstand his vow. This competition garners widespread attention and adds to the pressure on Matt.

By the 11th day of his abstinence, Matt remains committed to his vow, impressing both his brother John and Ryan. Their support highlights the contrast between Matt's internal struggles and external perceptions.
