The story follows Carola Hell, a celebrated actress at Vienna’s Theater in der Josefstadt, and Martin Hofmann, a Jewish journalist she plans to marry, as the March 1938 Anschluss looms. Though they try to ignore politics, their status and faith make neutrality impossible. When Martin’s friend Drechsler warns of the Nazi takeover, they cling to work and private happiness, dismissing the danger.
