The story follows Carola Hell, a celebrated actress at Vienna’s Theater in der Josefstadt, and Martin Hofmann, a Jewish journalist she plans to marry, as the March 1938 Anschluss looms. When Martin’s friend Drechsler warns of the Nazi takeover, they cling to work and private happiness, dismissing the danger.
