Zeros and Ones (2021) Plot Summary & Ending Explained

In the final moments of Zeros and Ones, the story leaves us with a sense of unresolved tension and ambiguity. J.J., having been hunted by soldiers, arrives at Valeria’s apartment to protect her and her daughter, but the ensuing chaos suggests that either he is captured, killed, or that things are left open-ended. The film hints that the military might have arrested or killed J.J. and Valeria, as their fate was not explicitly shown, emphasizing the uncertain and chaotic nature of war and conflict.

The last scene shows Justin’s innocent daughter appearing on the street, which could imply that the violence has claimed more innocent lives, or that the characters—whether J.J. or Valeria—may have been caught or killed by the military. The film’s closing message, articulated by Ethan Hawke in his brief concluding speech, underscores a powerful truth: that despite ideological differences, peaceful coexistence is possible and necessary. Hawke’s words suggest that violence fueled by division only accelerates the destruction of our world, and that humanity needs to learn to live alongside differing beliefs without resorting to death and chaos.
