With a Little Patience

From the forest, the main character, Virág Marjai, emerges and approaches a quiet, nondescript building, the scene framed in a calm, measured tone. She wears a white blouse and a plain gray skirt, and as she reaches the doorway she stops briefly, accepting a piece of jewelry from an unseen person and tucking it into her breast pocket with practiced ease.

Inside, she hands a card to a clerk, and her arrival is logged with a stamp and signature, marking the start of her orderly routine in a single-floor, makeshift office. She moves to another desk, where several files receive stamps as she methodically proceeds with her tasks. A quick stop at her locker leads her to inspect the jewelry once more before she heads to an open-plan office area, selecting an item from a row of pigeonholes on her way.

At her desk she becomes absorbed in her work: organizing files, reading notes scrawled on the backs of black-and-white photographs, and taking careful, almost clinical notes. The rhythm of the scene is interrupted when a group of men enters and walks down the hallway. A woman in the background rises and stands at attention as they pass, underscoring the formality and tension of the space. One of the men requests a document, and she complies without hesitation.

Her facial expression shifts as she glances at the jewelry again, briefly trying it on before hiding it as another office clerk strides by. She returns to her tasks, yet a distant sobbing outside pulls her attention. She moves to a window and, with the viewer, watches an elderly woman approach the building in a state of disorientation, seeking help. Two men appear, gently guiding her back toward the forest from which she came.

The tension rises when a prisoner pushes the group in a certain direction, and the camera pans to the right to reveal the film’s historical context: at the forest’s edge, Jews are rounded up, stripped of their belongings, and forced to surrender them under the supervision of soldiers and a General bearing a Nazi armband. The General strides past the office building, and the main character closes the window before stepping out of the frame.

The camera retreats, revealing only the forest as the scene shifts into a quiet, somber final image. A musical cue—“Absent,” performed by Elizabeth Spencer and Charles W. Harrison—plays as the screen cuts to black and the credits begin to roll.
