Brünhild learns Siegfried betrayed King Gunther, and Hagen’s murder of Siegfried sparks fresh vengeance. Hagen steals the treasure, drowns it and kills Alberich. Queen Kriemhild, sent to an abbey, loses her son in a raid by Hagen’s men. She marries Etzel, king of the Huns, invites the Burgundian court to a baptism and seeks revenge in brutal plot.
