What Happens in The Dragon’s Blood: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of The Dragon’s Blood (1958) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

A dying Siegland reaches the house of Mime, Alberto Cinquini the dwarf, begging him to raise her baby, called Sigfried, and handing over the sword of Sigfried's father. The moment is heavy with fate, as the infant’s future seems tethered to a world of peril and prophecy.

Years pass, and the grown-up Sigfried, Sebastian Fischer, sets out in search of the treasure of the Nibelungs. He slays a dragon with his invincible sword, and the dragon’s blood bathes him in a terrifying near-invulnerability that earns him the title of the bravest fighter of his era. He also uncovers a magic ring and Alberich’s hat, artifacts that grant invisibility and amplify the sense that nothing can stand in his way.

His feats bring him to the court of the King Gunther of Burgund, where he triumphs in a tournament for the hand of the beautiful Kriemhild, Ilaria Occhini. Yet an implacable opponent awaits him: Hagen von Tronje, Rolf Tasna, a rival who had already been defeated by Sigfried in a duel but remains a formidable obstacle in the political and romantic game that unfolds.

With the aid of his magic hat, Sigfried helps Gunther subjugate the queen of Iceland, Brunhild, Katharina Mayberg, and to make her Gunther’s wife, weaving a web of deceit that will have consequences beyond the immediate victory. The deception does not stay hidden for long, and Brunhild learns of Sigfried’s tricks, rejecting Gunther and vowing revenge against Sigfried.

Meanwhile, on Brunhild’s side, Hagen uncovers Sigfried’s secret—the vulnerable spot on his shoulder. This knowledge becomes deadly, and during a hunting trip, Hagen kills Sigfried, a blow that echoes through the hall of Burgund. Yet the victory is pyrrhic, for Hagen himself perishes in the collapsing grotto while clawing at the treasure that lies within.

Brunhild, shaken by the unintended role she played in Sigfried’s death, cannot escape the consequences of the tragedy and ultimately takes her own life, closing a saga that begins with a child’s fate and ends in a ruinous war of pride, love, and ambition.

The Dragon’s Blood Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about The Dragon’s Blood (1958): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Siegfried have a vulnerable spot on his shoulder if he bathed in dragon blood?

While Siegfried gains near-invulnerability from bathing in the dragon's blood, a single leaf from a linden tree falls onto his shoulder during the bath, creating one spot where the blood did not touch. This single vulnerability becomes the exact spot where Hagen strikes and kills him during the hunting trip.

Foreshadowing: The dragon slaying scene shows Siegfried immersed in blood but briefly pauses when a leaf falls, though the consequence of this moment only becomes clear later.

Q2

How does Hagen discover Siegfried's vulnerable spot?

Hagen learns about Siegfried's weakness from Kriemhild, Siegfried's wife. Kriemhild reveals the secret to Hagen, either deliberately to protect her own interests or through manipulation, giving him the knowledge needed to致命ly ambush Siegfried during the hunt.

Foreshadowing: Earlier at court, Kriemhild and Hagen have conversations that hint at growing tension and political maneuvering between their factions.

Q3

Why does Siegfried help Gunther deceive Brunhild?

Siegefriend assists Gunther in subduing Brunhild because Gunther is the king who welcomed Siegfried to his court and granted him Kriemhild's hand in marriage. The political alliance requires Brunhild, a powerful queen from Iceland, to become Gunther's wife. Siegfried uses his magic hat and ring to become invisible and overpower Brunhild on Gunther's behalf.

Foreshadowing: The tournament where Siegfried wins Kriemhild establishes his loyalty to Gunther's court and sets up the reciprocal obligation.

Q4

What causes Brunhild to swear revenge against Siegfried?

Brunhild discovers that Siegfried used trickery and invisibility to defeat her when she was subdued for Gunther. She learns that it was not through genuine combat prowess that Gunther claimed her, but through Siegfried's magical deception. This betrayal of honor incites her to reject Gunther and vow vengeance against Siegfried.

Foreshadowing: The scene where Siegfried uses the magic hat shows Brunhild's initial confusion and defeat, which later gives way to angry realization.

Q5

How does Brunhild's anger lead to Siegfried's death?

Brunhild's revelation of Siegfried's deception drives her to ally with Hagen against him. Though she does not directly kill Siegfried, her rage and alliance with Hagen provides Hagen the motive and opportunity to uncover Siegfried's weakness from Kriemhild. When Hagen kills Siegfried during the hunt, Brunhild's role in enabling the betrayal becomes clear.

Foreshadowing: The moment Brunhild learns of the deception shows her transformation from defeated queen to vengeful conspirator.

Q6

Why does Kriemhild tell Hagen about Siegfried's vulnerable spot?

Kriemhild reveals Siegfried's weakness to Hagen for complex political reasons. Whether through manipulation by Hagen, a desire to protect herself, or as part of a calculated move in the court's power struggles, her disclosure provides Hagen with the means to eliminate Siegfried. The exact motivation varies in telling, but it stems from the political tensions at Gunther's court.

Foreshadowing: Earlier tensions between Kriemhild and Siegfried's other rivals at court foreshadow her willingness to use damaging information as leverage.

Q7

What powers do the magic ring and Alberich's hat grant Siegfried?

The magic ring and Alberich's hat grant Siegfried the power of invisibility. These artifacts, which he discovers during his quest for the Nibelung treasure, allow him to move unseen. Siegfried uses these powers to help Gunther subdue Brunhild, making the invisible Siegfried appear as Gunther's strength rather than his own.

Foreshadowing: The discovery of these items early in Siegfried's quest establishes that he will use them for major plot manipulations later.

Q8

Why does Brunhild commit suicide after Siegfried's death?

Brunhild takes her own life after learning she was an involuntary participant in Siegfried's murder. Realizing that her vendetta against Siegfried indirectly caused his death through her alliance with Hagen, and feeling guilt for her role in the tragic chain of events, she cannot live with the consequences of her revenge.

Foreshadowing: Brunhild's intense emotional reactions throughout the film, from defeated pride to vengeful rage, set the stage for her ultimate despair.

After Siegfried's death, Hagen pursues the treasure for himself, but the grotto collapses on him as he tries to claim the gold. His greed leads to his own destruction, paralleling Siegfried's death as another consequence of the treasure's cursed nature.

Foreshadowing: The treasure is introduced early as a powerful, dangerous prize that drives multiple characters to their doom.
