After graduating from seminary, wealthy Southern aristocrat Joseph delays his parish duties to explore the ‘real world.’ He travels to New Orleans, where he falls for Bessie, a modest, unsophisticated orphan girl. The affair results in Bessie’s pregnancy with Joseph’s child, forcing him to confront the consequences before assuming his clerical duties.
