On the isolated Scottish island of Todday in the Outer Hebrides, life had mostly carried on through wartime rationing—until 1943, when the supply of whisky suddenly runs dry and a gray mood settles over the community. The islanders, who had learned to cope with shortages and small joys, find their routines upended as the prospect of celebration or relief through a drink feels far away and fragile.

Into this quiet tension returns Sergeant Odd on leave, hoping to win the heart of Peggy Macroon, the daughter of the local shopkeeper Joseph Macroon. Odd isn’t just a visitor with a mission of romance; he’s also a link to the island’s Home Guard, a reminder that wartime duties still press on in everyday life. Peggy, meanwhile, is caught between local expectations and the tremors of change in a tightly knit community.

Nearby, [George Campbell], a meek schoolteacher, has just proposed to Catriona Macroon, the other daughter of the Macroon family. His mother, Mrs. Campbell, a stern and domineering presence, resists the match, testing the young couple’s resolve and patience. Two locals—the rough but resourceful The Biffer and Sammy MacCodrun—dash to help, learning from the departing crew that the cargo is a staggering 50,000 cases of whisky. Word spreads quickly, and the island’s mood shifts from gloom to a feverish plan to salvage what they can. The moment crystallizes the old island wisdom: hardship can be met with cleverness, camaraderie, and a sense of shared ritual.

Captain Waggett, the starchy English commander of the local Home Guard, tries to assert control over the valuable cargo, aiming to confiscate it for the state. But [Macroon] himself argues, in a distinctly Todday fashion, that there is a longstanding custom—a rèiteach, a betrothal rite in which whisky must be served—by which a man can prove his worth and courtship fidelity. The tradition becomes a tactical pivot: if the men can orchestrate the salvage under their own terms, they can secure both their future and the whisky, which has become more than a drink—it’s a symbol of courage and social standing.
