Captain Waggett commands the local Home Guard on the fictional Hebridean island of Todday during the Second World War, supported by the experienced Sergeant Odd. Odd is engaged to Peggy, the daughter of the island’s postmaster, Joseph Macroon. Macroon’s other daughter, Catriona, hopes to marry George Campbell, a mild-mannered local schoolteacher who is overshadowed by his domineering mother. The island feels distant from the worst of wartime shortages, until a new crisis arises that will test its stubborn sense of community.
In the quiet hush of night, the freighter SS Cabinet Minister runs aground near Todday. As the ship sinks and the crew abandons it, the islanders discover that its cargo includes 50,000 cases of Scotch whisky destined for New York. The discovery electrifies the islanders, who immediately begin plotting salvaging it. Yet they must pause because it is the Sabbath, and tradition dictates they wait until the day’s end.
When salvage finally gets underway, Waggett learns of the whisky and orders Odd to stand guard. Macroon had earlier explained to Odd that, by long-standing custom, a rèiteach—a betrothal ceremony—must precede a wedding, and you cannot have a rèiteach without whisky. In a stance of stubborn solidarity with the islanders, Odd allows himself to be tied and bound, effectively permitting a controlled salvage to proceed.
Waggett launches a broader search for the salvaged cases, aided reluctantly by the local policeman, Constable McPhee. The islanders respond with ingenuity, concealing the drink at every turn and staying one step ahead of the authorities. To tighten the net, Waggett enlists Customs and Excise officers led by Mr Farquharson. Yet the locals’ clever hiding places and schemes keep foiling his efforts.
The rèiteach goes ahead, and the events take on a bold, festive air. Fortified by the terms of whiskey, the usually cautious George Campbell finds the courage to defy his mother and declare that he will marry Catriona with or without her blessing. The tension between duty, tradition, and desire threads through the ceremonies and the preparations.
Meanwhile, Waggett is summoned away to the mainland to answer questions from his superiors after several bottles of whisky are found planted in a case of ammunition he had shipped. With Waggett temporarily out of the picture, the islanders press forward, and the weddings of both couples occur during the long days of the summer solstice, their celebrations buoyed by plentiful supplies of the water of life.
What unfolds is a story of communal resilience, wit, and quiet bravery in the face of authority, where a small community holds fast to its customs while navigating the moral complexities of survival during war. The island’s ingenuity, humor, and stubborn optimism illuminate how people come together when resources are scarce and traditions demand more than they can always offer.
