On a train bound for lawless northern China, Gordon Creed, a shrewd businessman, crosses paths with his old acquaintance, Myron Galt, and Galt’s striking daughter, Lola Galt. Galt is on his way to foreclose on a promising oilfield built up by Jim Hallet, while Creed hopes to offer Hallet enough money to settle the loan to Galt in exchange for a clean stake in the oilfield. The mood on the carriage shifts quickly from cordial to tense as old loyalties, mounting debts, and hidden motives begin to surface.
Creed’s reserved compartment is abruptly seized by General Fu Shan, who is en route to meet the warlord General Wu Yen Fang, a man who has seized control of a province. The tension in the air thickens when Fang’s agents strike on the moving train, assassinating Fu Shan and leaving Creed and his companions to reckon with the dangerous new balance of power. The incident pulls them toward a shadowed path of rebellion, intrigue, and shifting alliances as they press on to a remote town where more revelations await.
After a tense stop for a military inquiry led by General Ma, the group rides by horse to the town, only to discover not just Hallet, but Creed’s estranged wife Jane Creed, who has joined the ranks of a missionary, Dr. Abernathy. Fang’s right-hand man, Captain Nui, and his men seize control of the settlement. When Nui fixes his gaze on Jane, Hallet intervenes with a show of force, and the two men clash. Jane and Hallet’s past bond resurfaces, though she remains resolute in her stance against divorce, keeping their relationship largely platonic even as affection begins to rekindle. Hallet’s defiance leads to his capture, and he is imprisoned while Fang watches the situation unfold with a calculating patience.
When Fang arrives, he tries to persuade Jane to accompany him, casually boasting, “I am Fang.” The moment becomes a linchpin in the unfolding drama: Hallet escapes with help from an ally masquerading as one of Fang’s soldiers and rushes to alert General Ma of Fang’s whereabouts. In a daring confrontation, Hallet interrupts Fang and Jane’s private chat, triggering memories of a shared past—Hallet once concealed a coolie and extracted three bullets from his shoulder, a reminder of Fang’s earlier cruelty and subsequent rise to power. Moved by a blend of pragmatism and grudging respect for his benefactor, Fang decides to maneuver the crisis to his advantage. He robs Creed of $50,000, applies it to settle the debt with Galt, and then tosses the windfall toward Dr. Abernathy in a gambit that blurs ethics with necessity.
Creed responds with a brutal gambit of his own: he pays Captain Nui to rebel against Fang, hoping to salvage his own position. Nui, seeking to reclaim face, pushes toward the execution of Hallet, but Fang outmaneuvers him by allowing a firing squad to close in—only to have Mr. Cheng kill Nui at the last moment, removing the obstacle in Fang’s broader plan. The plot thickens as Fang then shoots Creed to resolve the “romantic problem” between Jane and Hallet, though Creed’s death only wounds Hallet, not extinguish the love that remains between them.
As government troops flood into the town, battle erupts and the captives are marched toward safety, while Jane and Hallet tend to his wound. Creed, attempting one final, desperate gambit, aims to push Hallet into a fatal accident, but Fang ends the conspirator’s life instead. With the town’s defense collapsing, Fang chooses surrender over a doomed, prolonged conflict and is subsequently executed by firing squad, signaling a grim end to the power games that fueled the clash.
I am Fang.
