Welcome to Welcome To The Punch, a gripping tale that unravels the complex relationship between a former English criminal and a determined detective. The story centers on Jacob Sternwood, portrayed by Mark Strong, who emerges from his self-imposed exile in Iceland to rescue his son, Ruan Sternwood (Elyes Gabel), after a heist spirals out of control. Jacob has long been the target of Detective Max Lewinsky, played by James McAvoy, leading to a high-stakes game of cat and mouse that ultimately positions them as unexpected partners in a shared quest for truth.
Once a notorious robber operating in London, Jacob’s fate collided with that of Max when their paths crossed in a dramatic confrontation that left Max wounded and Jacob on the run. Fast forward three years, and Ruan finds himself in dire straits after being shot during a chaotic escape from a stationary plane, all while desperately attempting to reach out to his father before facing arrest. Despite media claims that Ruan was involved in illicit activities alongside accomplice Otis Blake, the reality is far more intricate.
Max, alongside his partner Sarah Hawks (played by Andrea Riseborough), leads the investigation following the arrest of Dean Warns (Johnny Harris), who is tied to the shooting incident involving Otis. Unfortunately, the case takes a frustrating turn when Max’s superiors, including Commander Thomas Geiger (David Morrissey) and DCI Nathan Bartnick (Daniel Mays), allow Warns to walk free, as crucial witness testimonies crumble under pressure.
Max, sensing that Ruan’s connection to Jacob is significant, assumes responsibility for protecting Ruan, yet tragedy strikes when Ruan suffers a cardiac arrest. Meanwhile, Karen Edwards (Danielle Brent), a reporter, capitalizes on the chaos to bolster Thomas’s campaign for Mayor, vowing to tackle gun violence.
As Jacob investigates Ruan’s hotel room, he uncovers a bloody shirt and a cache of cash, prompting him to leverage his connections to spread the word about his son’s whereabouts. Tension mounts when Max uncovers the corruption surrounding the witness testimony, leading him to the Gregomar hotel, where chaos ensues and Jacob confronts intruders.
The narrative escalates as Sarah independently follows Warns, leading to a chilling discovery that ends tragically. A dangerous confrontation is set in motion when Jacob and Max engage Bartnick and Warns in a final showdown, resulting in a series of deadly revelations.
In a heart-wrenching climax, Max learns of both Ruan and Sarah’s deaths, driving him and Jacob to confront Warns’s family. The ensuing conflict unveils a conspiracy involving Thomas and a military contractor, further complicating the layers of betrayal.
In a final act of vengeance and teamwork, Jacob and Max fight their way through hired soldiers and confront their enemies, ultimately leading to a bittersweet resolution as Max lets Jacob walk away after a fierce battle, leaving the audience to ponder the cost of justice and the bonds formed in the face of adversity.
