Plot Summary
In late 1809 Natasha attends her first ball, where Andrei declares his love and wants to marry, but her father orders a delay. While the prince is abroad she yearns for him, then falls for Anatol Kuragin and plans to elope. She hesitates, aborts the scheme, and Bolkonsky ends their engagement. Pierre, trying to soothe her, confesses his love.
