Vadakkupatti Ramasamy

In Vadakupatty, Kannathaal is washed away by a flood, triggering drought and famine across the village. The people cling to the belief that their deity is buried somewhere on their land, even as nature grows harsher. This catastrophe sows the seeds for two rival factions who vow to restore Kannathaal and challenge the looming Katteri threat.

With Kannathaal gone, villagers whisper of a Katteri roaming the night and looting resources. Darkness becomes dangerous as people avoid roaming after sunset. The fear pushes the community to seek a way to bring back their deity's protection.

Mookaiyan and Kalaiyan, leaders from feuding families, vie for influence by promising to recover Kannathaal and defeat the Katteri. Their feud spills into village life as they recruit supporters and compete for loyalty. The division weakens the village just as the threat seems to grow.

Ramasamy, a pot seller, tries to make a sale to his crush's father in the market while the crowd is warned to return home because the Katteri prowls nearby. The incident underscores his precarious livelihood during the famine and his strained relationship with the market's expectations. He senses the danger while stubbornly pursuing a sale.

Back at home, Ramasamy laments the absence of mercy from the gods and explains how famine has forced him to sell pots instead of pursuing studies. He openly defies the notion of divine protection, illustrating the tension between belief and survival.

A thief fleeing the police enters Vadakupatty and steals jewels from another temple. He hides one jewel inside a pot belonging to Ramasamy and buries the pot on his land, marking the spot with a rock as a reference point.

Ramasamy wakes to a disturbance and chases the thief, while a tribal man from Thekkupatty drives a bullock cart toward him. The cart crashes and topples, allowing the thief to escape and causing the jewel and pot to resurface. Villagers interpret this as Kannathaal driving away the Katteri.

Coins spill from Ramasamy's purse onto the pot, which villagers now treat as an offering to their deity. Seeing the growing belief, Ramasamy abandons his skepticism and embraces the pot as a means to profit from worship.

In the 1960s, about twenty years after the initial incident, Ramasamy begins to con people in the name of the god, exploiting the villagers' faith for personal gain. His schemes reflect a complete shift from desperation to calculated manipulation.

A new Tehsildar arrives in the taluka and sees potential loot through temple lands, advising Ramasamy to lease temple land for profit. The idea triggers a new dynamic in the temple economy and raises tensions with the factions.

Ramasamy pushes ahead with the lease, making sure both Mookaiyan and Kalaiyan acknowledge the arrangement. The attempt to appease both sides tests the village's leadership and the control of the temple's resources.

After the lease agreement, the Tehsildar enters the temple and instigates further fighting between the factions. The collector orders the temple to be closed indefinitely, as the dispute cannot be resolved quickly.

Kayalvizhi, Ramasamy's childhood crush who has become an army doctor, returns to Vadakupatty after many years. Her arrival hints at changing loyalties and hints at upheaval in the god-claimed order of the village.
