The Magician

Albert Vogler leads a traveling troupe called Vogler’s Magnetic Health Theater, a group that claims to wield supernatural abilities. The company includes Granny Vogler, Albert’s grandmother; his wife, Manda, who disguises herself as a man under the alias Mr. Aman; his charming helper, Tubal; and their driver, Simson. Albert proclaims he has discovered a form of animal magnetism. After leaving Copenhagen, the troupe travels by carriage through rugged countryside toward Sweden, where eerie screams drift from the forest. They soon pick up an unwell man named Johan Spegel, a former vaudevillian, and invite him to join the group, only to watch him fall increasingly ill. Albert notices that Johan appears to die in the carriage, a moment that unsettles everyone but passes as they continue the journey.

In a small village, the troupe meets Consul Egerman and his wife Ottilia, who take an avid interest in the occult. Tubal reveals to them that Albert is mute, and the locals begin to doubt the legitimacy of the advertisement-filled spectacle they’ve come to see. Dr. Vergerus, the Minister of Health, openly accuses Albert of quackery and pseudoscience, while secretly betting on whether the illusions can be exposed or proven. The troupe’s dinner with Sara and Sanna, two servants enchanted by the group, introduces Tubal’s love potions, crafted by Granny. The head cook Sofia notices Tubal’s bravado but remains drawn to him, inviting his attention as the night grows stormy.

As the storm rages, Sanna grows fearful after Granny proclaims she is a 200-year-old witch. Meanwhile, Simson flirts with Sara and the couple shares a drink from Tubal’s aphrodisiac potions before sleeping together. Ottilia returns and tells Albert she believes in his powers, explaining that the townspeople only mock him because they do not understand him. She confesses that she hopes he can reach out to her deceased daughter. After Ottilia leaves, Johan reappears to Albert and laments his “unused” life before dying in Albert’s arms; Albert conceals Johan’s body in a hidden compartment inside a large trunk. Egerman watches from the shadows and is shaken, unsure whether he has witnessed a living apparition.

That night, Vergerus visits Manda in her room, where the masculine disguise has been discarded. She admits that the troupe is fleeing from the authorities and concedes the entire act is a calculated fraud. Albert overhears the conversation, confronts Vergerus, and strikes him when he goads him. He removes his wig, and Manda consoles him, recounting the road they’ve traveled, the home they left behind, and his choice to hide behind a masculine disguise.

The next morning, the troupe stages a public magic show for the townspeople. Tubal asks Henrietta Starbeck, the wife of the Police Superintendent, to volunteer for a trick, and Manda uses magnets to coax humiliating confessions from her husband in front of the crowd. Engelson, another local, is chosen for a trick in which Albert appears to manipulate his body. During the performance, Albert collapses and dies, and Antonsson flees in horror before taking his own life. Back in the attic, Albert’s body is placed in the trunk—unknowingly joined by Johan’s body—and brought to the autopsy room.

Vergerus performs a full autopsy, only to be startled when Albert steps out of the shadows alive. He demands to know whose body was examined, and Albert wryly replies that it was a “poor actor”—the corpse had been Johan’s, which had been stored in the trunk as well. Enraged, Vergerus dismisses the troupe’s act as “miserable” and pays Albert with a single coin as the entertainment’s value. Manda orders Simson to hitch the horses so they can depart, but Tubal announces his wish to remain with Sofia. Granny declares she will no longer join them and plans to live the rest of her years from the savings she has accumulated selling potions. A brokenhearted Sara asks to come along, and Albert and Manda agree to take her with them.

Before they can leave, police officers return with them to the house, where they are hopeful they will be charged with crimes. Instead, the Police Superintendent informs them that the king wishes them to perform at the Royal Palace. With that unexpected invitation, Albert, Manda, Simson, and Sara set off for Stockholm, ready to continue their extraordinary life on a larger stage, leaving behind skeptics and embracing a new audience ready to believe.
