Anoop, a law student studying in Calcutta, comes from a family where his widowed mother lives in a small town in West Bengal, and his sister Sudha, who is married to Anil, resides in the same city. As Anoop reaches marriageable age, his mother begins searching for a suitable bride and selects a girl named Vidya from her neighborhood. However, Anoop is hesitant and insists on meeting her first. During his visit, he also gets introduced to Minoo, the lively daughter of Sharda and Ramchandra, from a nearby village. After meeting both women, Anoop informs his mother that he cannot marry Vidya and is determined to marry only Minoo.
Eventually, his mother reluctantly agrees to the union, and the two are married. However, soon after, it becomes clear that Minoo is largely inexperienced—she lacks basic household skills, is not well-educated, and displays a rather immature demeanor. Her interests seem simple and childlike, mainly stealing mangoes, playing with young children, and engaging in childish mischief. Her behavior frustrates Anoop’s mother, who finds herself having to keep Minoo confined and under supervision. When Anoop prepares to return to Calcutta, he asks Minoo to come with him, but she refuses, feeling insecure and unsure about moving to the city.
Left behind with her mother, Minoo begins to realize how much she misses her husband. The playful activities that once entertained her lose their appeal, and loneliness prompts her to understand her true feelings of love for Anoop. She confesses to her mother that she wishes to return to her husband’s house, reconcile with her mother-in-law, and live happily with her husband. Minoo then makes a transformation—she studies her household duties diligently and strives to become a better wife.
Despite her efforts, Anoop does not visit her, even during holidays, which hurts her feelings. She comes to understand that her earlier refusal to go to Calcutta may have wounded Anoop’s pride and that he was waiting for her to write and ask him to return. Realizing this, Minoo writes a heartfelt letter requesting his visit, but unfortunately, she lacks his address, so the letter never reaches him. Meanwhile, his mother, recognizing Minoo’s sincere love and longing for her husband, suggests that they visit Calcutta. The couple finally reunites at Anoop’s sister’s house in Calcutta, where love triumphs and they find happiness together.
Throughout this story, the themes of love, maturity, and understanding are deeply explored, highlighting how patience and self-improvement can bridge gaps and forge strong bonds. The characters’ journeys reflect the importance of adaptation and genuine emotion in building a lasting relationship, even amid initial misunderstandings and differences.
