After President Lincoln signs one of his last bills, the Union Pacific Railroad is authorized to cross the wilderness to California. Financial opportunist Asa Barrows tries to profit by obstructing the line. Chief troubleshooter Jeff Butler fights Barrows’ agent, gambler Sid Campeau, while Sid’s partner, war‑friend Dick Allen, also vies for engineer Molly Monahan’s affection. The race to finish the railroad becomes a deadly struggle.
