The film opens with George Newman in a daydream, envisioning himself as a parody of Indiana Jones. He embarks on an adventurous mission to steal an Academy Award statue but faces comedic peril when a giant boulder chases him, illustrating his overactive imagination.

George and his best friend Bob are working at Big Edna's Burger World when George makes an unflattering comment about the owner, Big Edna. She overhears him, leading to both of them being fired and unceremoniously thrown out onto the street.

At a family party, George's compulsive gambling uncle, Harvey, unexpectedly wins a struggling UHF television station in a poker game. Under the encouragement of his wife, Uncle Harvey decides to hand control of the station over to George.

The next morning, George and Bob arrive at Channel 62 and meet the quirky staff, including the ambitious receptionist Pamela, the eccentric engineer Philo, and dwarf cameraman Noodles. Their interactions highlight the unique and dysfunctional environment of the station.

George attempts to introduce himself to the rival Channel 8 but encounters its owner R.J. Fletcher, who angrily chases him away. This event sets up a rivalry that escalates throughout the film as George tries to make Channel 62 successful.

While leaving Channel 8, George meets Stanley Spadowski, a janitor fired unjustly by Fletcher. Recognizing Stanley's enthusiasm, George offers him a position at Channel 62, where he becomes a key part of the station's charm.

Seeing the outdated programming at Channel 62, George decides to create new shows to attract viewers. He introduces several original series, including the underwhelmingly titled 'Uncle Nutzy's Clubhouse.' This sparks creativity among the staff.

The pressures of managing the station cause George to forget Teri's birthday, leading to a heartbreaking breakup. This moment serves as a turning point for George, affecting both his personal life and dedication to Channel 62.

After George gives control of 'Uncle Nutzy's Clubhouse' to Stanley, they visit a bar and discover that everyone is captivated by Stanley's antics on Channel 62. This realization ignites a resurgence of creativity and motivation in George and Bob.

Channel 62's innovative programming gains traction, outperforming Channel 8. As George's efforts lead to success, rival Fletcher becomes increasingly agitated by the UHF station's rising viewership, setting the stage for conflict.

Fletcher uses Harvey's gambling debts to his advantage, offering to cover them in exchange for control over Channel 62. This ultimatum pressures George to act quickly to save the station from being shut down.

To raise the money needed to pay off Harvey's debt, George organizes a 48-hour telethon, energizing the staff and leveraging Stanley’s charisma. The telethon initially starts off strong, capturing the viewers' attention.

Just as the telethon is gaining momentum, Fletcher's henchmen kidnap Stanley, throwing the event into chaos. George rallies his team to devise a plan to rescue Stanley and keep the telethon going.

George, determined to save Stanley, leads a daring infiltration of Channel 8. In an elaborate fantasy sequence, he imagines himself as Rambo, showcasing his creativity and desperation to rescue his friend.

After rescuing Stanley, George and his team manage to successfully complete the telethon and save Channel 62 from financial ruin. As the dust settles, George rekindles his relationship with Teri while the employees of Channel 62 celebrate their triumph.
