Two and Two Make Six

Larry deserts from American service in England after going AWOL. He accidentally knocks out a sergeant sent to arrest him, giving him a free escape. He then rides away on a motorcycle with Julie through the English countryside.

At a transport cafe, the two bikers' outfits and bikes appear similar from behind, causing a swap. Julie climbs onto Tom Bennett's bike while Irene ends up on Larry's. They realize their mistake about ten minutes later and scramble to correct it.

The two couples return to the cafe to resolve the mistaken identities. Tom is ridiculed at the counter, making the situation awkward. Larry bolts when a police car appears, and the couples head in opposite directions—Tom and Julie toward Sevenhills, Larry and Irene toward Westport.

Tom travels to Sevenhills to seek his Aunt Phoebe, who runs a college for young ladies. Aunt Phoebe is initially perplexed and jokes about a love triangle, but she treats Tom and Julie with warmth and kindness. She offers shelter and calm guidance.

Larry and Irene head to a hotel, only to be turned away by suspicious staff. Ted the barman advises them to try another hotel that will take them. The night porter is surprised when they request two rooms instead of one.

Julie appears in Tom's bedroom wearing pyjamas and the two talk. He is shy, but she moves the moment along and they share a kiss. The moment marks a turning point in their relationship.

Larry heads to the docks to arrange an illicit passage out of the country, but his cash is still in Sevenhills. He returns to Irene's hotel room and explains the whole story to her. Irene is asleep nude but remains polite and attentive as he speaks.

The next day, Irene buys a new dress and begins locating Sevenhills Ladies College and Aunt Phoebe. She plans how to influence events and perhaps win Larry's release. Her actions show her intent to shape the outcome.

Meanwhile Julie goes clothes shopping, using money Larry had left with her. She uses the cash to present herself more confidently as their situation unfolds. The act highlights their reliance on each other and resourcefulness.

Back at the college, Irene shows Tom a view of her wearing a basque, attempting to claim intimacy and status. Larry arrives at the door, and a heated fight erupts between the men. The confrontation underscores the tensions between loyalty, desire, and risk.

Irene tells Larry that she loves him. She materialises at the US Army HQ as Larry agrees to surrender to the authorities. She claims to be pregnant by him to try to lessen his court-martial sentence, though the pregnancy claim is untrue.

We jump forward to a closing image of the two girls pushing prams, suggesting a calmer, more domestic path ahead after the chaos. The film ends on a note of ordinary life after upheaval.
