Twixt

Hall, a down-on-his-luck writer, is approached at a small-town book signing by Sheriff Bobby LaGrange who asks him to read his latest work and accompany him to the morgue to view a murder victim. Hall reluctantly agrees, hoping the experience will spark a story. At the morgue, he learns the victim was murdered by a serial killer, and he declines to look at the victim's face.

Inside the morgue, Hall is confronted with the sense that the town hides dark patterns behind its ordinary façade. The murder revelation pushes him toward the idea of writing a piece focused on the town's eerie history. He resolves to let the town's strangeness drive his next project.

In a coffee shop, Hall hears of a local hotel that once sheltered Edgar Allan Poe, a hint that the town is steeped in literary myth. The notion of weaving the town's legends into a vampire-focused story begins to take shape.

That night Hall drifts into a dreamlike version of the town and meets Virginia, Vampira, a fan with eerie teeth who cannot attend the signing due to the clock tower's seven conflicting times. He enters the hotel and encounters a quirky couple who discuss daylight saving and the town's murders; Vampira appears in the window, is chased away, and a sequence with Poe guides him back to town.

The next morning, Hall is inspired and decides to collaborate with Bobby on a vampire-centered story. Bobby shows him a miniature machine designed to drive a stake into a vampire's heart, which he wants to name The Vampire Executions. Despite this, Hall struggles with writer's block and takes sleeping pills to dream again.

In the dream world, Hall again encounters Poe and is shown visions that implicate the priest in abusing orphans to keep them from Flamingo, the vampire faction across the lake. The visions reveal that V survived briefly but was chased down and murdered by the priest, who then hangs himself in shame.

Back in the waking world, Hall's reality begins to unravel as strange incidents echo his dream. Bobby speaks of teenagers by the lake as 'evil' and 'asking for it', fueling Hall's distrust; during the tense confrontation, Bobby knocks Hall unconscious.

In the dream, Hall learns that V survives the priest's assaults and is rescued by Flamingo; this realization inspires him to write a story where V lives. The revelation compounds his guilt about his daughter's death and motivates a cathartic turn in the narrative.

Hall wakes to a grim reality: Bobby is missing, the deputy is dead, and Bobby leaves a note that reads 'Guilty' before taking his own life.

Hall goes to the morgue to look at the murder victim's face, only to find that the body is V's, impaled on a stake. He removes the stake, and as she awakens, V lashes out with a new set of elongated fangs.

Meanwhile, the publisher Sam Malkin appears, setting down a new manuscript and telling Hall that he loves the story, hinting at a broader series to come and Hall's rise in fame.

On the screen, an ending text reveals that Bobby's murder remains unsolved and Flamingo's whereabouts are unknown, while V's fate suggests a continuing supernatural thread. The sequence is framed as the manuscript having found a life of its own, leaving viewers with an ambiguous future for Hall.
