It is the third “fustanella” film after Gkolfo (1914) and Astero (1929), adapted from Dimitrios Koromilas’s successful rhyming pastoral play inspired by Giannis Zalokostas’s poem “I fell in love with a shepherdess.” Set in mid‑19th‑century rural Greece, landlord Mitros gives a golden cross to Kroustallo, unaware she loves the destitute shepherd Liakos, whom Mitros once rescued from drowning. The cross sparks rivalry, and Mitros also asks Kroustallo’s mother, Mrs Stathaina—his childhood love—for her hand.
