In a Peloponnesian village on the slopes of Mt. Chelmos, wealthy sheep‑herder Mitros lives with his wife Asimina, his son Thymios and his adopted daughter Astero. Though the children are close, Mitros arranges Astero’s betrothal to another rich shepherd, Stamos. After Stamos is murdered and Astero goes mad, Mitros, seeing his son’s decline, tells him the family’s whole fortune now belongs to Astero and urges him to marry her, hoping to keep the estate intact.
