TRON: Ares

The film unfolds inside The Grid, opening with a video in which Kevin Flynn, Jeff Bridges, explains what the Grid is and shares his predictions for the programs that inhabit it. The scene transitions to news coverage that puts ENCOM in a race with Dillinger Systems to control the Grid. ENCOM is run by Eve Kim, [Greta Lee], and her sister Tess Kim, while Julian Dillinger, [Evan Peters], the head of Dillinger Systems, pursues both legacy and a secret plan of his own. At the center of this corporate tug-of-war is Julian’s creation: Ares, [Jared Leto], a highly advanced Master Control program designed to be the ultimate expendable super-soldier, tested against other programs before presenting him to investors. However, Ares and the other programs face a dangerous clock—their lives outside The Grid won’t last longer than 29 minutes, after which they will de-rez. Julian’s quest is twofold: to master the Permanence Code that would keep the programs alive in the real world indefinitely and to push Dillinger Systems ahead of ENCOM. Elisabeth, [Gillian Anderson], Julian’s mother, notes his ambition but cautions him against deceiving investors.

In Alaska, Eve and her colleague Seth Flores, [Arturo Castro], work in a private station Flynn left behind as they chase a way to obtain the Permanence Code for themselves. Tess has long since passed away, but Eve keeps Tess’s research alive and continues the work. Eve eventually uncovers Flynn’s old files and computers to reveal the Permanence Code, demonstrating its power by transferring a digital orange tree into the real world, where it remains visible for hours. Eve and Seth celebrate this breakthrough. Eve reaches out to Ajay Singh, [Hasan Minhaj], ENCOM’s Chief Technology Officer, and his assistant Erin, [Sarah Desjardins], as they head to a high-profile event to showcase ENCOM’s new launch. On the other side, Julian dispatches Ares and other programs, including Athena, [Jodie Turner-Smith], to breach ENCOM’s servers. The Dillinger program assault escalates into a full-on clash, and Ares even tries to save an injured program named Caius, [Cameron Monaghan], before Julian detonates a payload that cripples ENCOM’s grid and wipes out the other programs, silencing the event.

As Ares regenerates, he begins to move beyond his original programming, becoming self-aware. Julian tasks Ares with locating Eve, knowing she possesses the Permanence Code. Ares starts absorbing information about Eve and Tess, recalling moments like Tess’s physical decline and Eve’s grieving after her sister’s death. Ajay makes contact with Eve to coordinate a response as Dillinger’s cyberattack continues. When Eve returns to the city, she and Seth split up, while Ares and Athena pursue her. Eve, carrying the drive that holds the Permanence Code, races on a motorcycle through chaotic streets as the Grid’s light cycles carve their path through the city. In a tense sequence, Eve defeats Athena in a parking garage and steals Athena’s Light Cycle. The chase continues until Ares and Eve crash on the dock, where Eve finally discovers what Ares truly is, and both Ares and Athena de-rez as their remaining time runs out. Eve discards the identity disc by throwing the drive into the river and is seized by a Dillinger aircraft.

Inside The Grid, Ares begins to understand the consequences of pulling Eve’s identity from her. He contemplates removing the code from Eve’s identity disc, but Flynn warns that such an act would kill her. Julian, undeterred, orders the operation to proceed. Ares defies his directive, freeing Eve, while Athena obeys Julian’s orders to pursue them. Ares agrees to help Eve reach the real world on the condition that she gives him the Permanence Code.

The pair manage to reach Dillinger Systems and steal a truck to head toward ENCOM’s headquarters. Athena is equipped with her own weapon and jet pack to chase them. They ditch the truck for a gas station attendant’s car, aided by Eve’s call to Seth, who waits with a plan to deploy a particle laser at ENCOM. As they race toward ENCOM, Eve and Ares converse about their motivations—Ares quickly absorbs knowledge of the real world and even expresses an interest in music like Depeche Mode, while Eve reflects on Tess and the shared goal they had for their work.

Seth joins Ajay and Erin at ENCOM as they attempt to hack the Dillinger Grid to stop Athena, while police and military forces struggle to contain the crisis. The team breaks through the Dillinger mainframe, obliterating the Grid, and the city’s defense begins to falter. Eve and Ares reach ENCOM with the particle laser to send Ares into the original Flynn grid; Athena arrives to seize Eve but delays long enough for Ares to jump out the window just as the weapon pulls him in. Athena crashes through and slices the laser in half to prevent Ares from returning, then incapacitates Seth. The sprinklers engage, briefly hindering Athena and giving Eve enough time to escape before her time runs out and she de-rezzes.

Athena returns to Dillinger Systems just as Elisabeth regains control of ENCOM’s leadership, restoring order as the CEO. She tries to stop Athena, but Athena stabs Elisabeth in the stomach with her identity disc, honoring her directive even as she recognizes the harm she has caused. Athena takes a Recognizer and flies away, while Julian cradles his dying mother, who blames him for the consequences of his choices. In the Grid, a program manifestation of Flynn confronts Ares, and they discuss programming, purpose, and Ares’s longing for permanence. Moved by Ares’s sincerity, Flynn grants him the Permanence Code, allowing him to return to the real world in a neon white suit and live freely.

Back on Earth, Seth, Ajay, and Erin continue their efforts to disrupt the Dillinger Grid and stop Athena, while law enforcement and military forces close in. The Recognizer is brought down, and Eve finds herself trapped within the light strips left by his missiles. Athena secures Eve in a tank, but Ares intervenes, battling Athena with his disc and her baton. As Dillinger Systems collapses, authorities sweep in to arrest Julian as he attempts to vanish by entering The Grid. Eve and Ares sadly part ways, each accepting the other’s choices and future paths.

In the closing moments, Eve resumes her work with the Permanence Code to benefit others, and Seth gives her a postcard from Ares, who is now traveling the world in search of Sam and Quorra—the other program who survived The Grid—while embracing his new freedom. During the credits, Julian enters the remains of his Grid, discovers his grandfather’s old identity disc, and begins to build armor reminiscent of Sark, hinting at a new chapter born from the old.
