What Happens in Trolls Holiday: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Trolls Holiday (2017) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

After Trollstice, the Bergen town tradition of feasting on Trolls is canceled, leaving the Bergens with no holidays to celebrate. Poppy, Anna Kendrick, who has received countless cards celebrating days of the week and times of day, decides to share Troll holidays with the Bergens. She enlists the Snack Pack and her friend Branch, Justin Timberlake, and they set off on a bus driven by Cloud Guy, hoping to introduce a new rhythm of joy. A journey through a strange wormhole drops the Trolls into Bergen Town, a place far from Troll Village.

The Trolls meet Bridget, Zooey Deschanel, and King Gristle, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and introduce their holiday customs with bright colors, songs, and plenty of spectacle. The overwhelmed Bergens are not ready for such exuberance, and Bridget asks Poppy to give them space. Heartbroken, Poppy heads back into the forest with her friends, while Branch tries to console her with songs that point to where things might have gone wrong. Back in Bergen Town, Bridget and Gristle begin to question how hard they’ve been on the Trolls, and Bridget starts to see that Poppy truly cares about their happiness.

Poppy realizes she has been so focused on sharing Troll traditions that she forgot to listen to Bridget’s needs. When she and Branch return to Bergen Town, they discover the town has begun to decorate with Bergens’ own efforts, signaling a possible thaw. The two communities exchange apologies, and Branch finally cracks a small smile, much to Poppy’s delight. In a heartwarming turn, the Bergens and the Trolls come together to celebrate a new shared holiday, Troll-A-Bration, and find that friendship and festivity can blend across their differences.

Q1

Why does Poppy want to share Troll holidays with the Bergens?

After Trollstice is canceled, the Bergens lose all their holidays and have nothing to celebrate. Poppy starts receiving cards from Bergens celebrating simple things like days of the week and times of day, which shows her they desperately want something to enjoy. She sees this as an opportunity to help bridge the gap between the two groups.

Q2

Why are the Bergens overwhelmed by the Trolls' celebration?

The Bergens have lived without holidays for a long time and are not accustomed to the Trolls' exuberant, colorful traditions. When Poppy and the Trolls arrive with bright colors, songs, and constant spectacle, it's simply too much for the Bergens to handle at once. Bridget explicitly asks for space because the celebration is overbearing.

Q3

Why does Bridget ask the Trolls to leave Bergen Town?

Bridget is overwhelmed by the Trolls' constant singing, bright colors, and high-energy holiday presentations. She cares about her people and realizes they need time to adjust to the idea of new celebrations. Her request comes from a place of wanting to protect her community from being bombarded, not from anger toward Poppy.

Q4

Why is Branch unfamiliar with happiness at the start of the movie?

Branch has always been the cautious, pessimistic member of the Trolls. He's worried about how it will feel to embrace joy because he's spent most of his life being wary and preparing for danger. His character arc involves learning that it's okay to be happy and to share joy with others.

Q5

Why do Bridget and Gristle regret how they treated the Trolls?

After the Trolls leave, Bridget and Gristle have time to reflect on what happened. Bridget realizes that Poppy genuinely cared about the Bergens' happiness and was only trying to help them. This insight makes them regret being so harsh and wanting to push the Trolls away.

Q6

What makes Poppy realize she needs to listen instead of just celebrate?

After Bridget asks her to leave, Poppy confides in Branch about fearing she ruined the friendship. Through conversations in the forest, she realizes she was so focused on sharing Troll traditions that she forgot to listen to what the Bergens actually wanted or needed. This realization changes her approach when she returns.

Q8

Why does Branch finally smile at the end of the movie?

It represents his growth in accepting happiness.

Q9

How does the wormhole transport the Trolls to Bergen Town?

Q10

Why is Trollstice canceled in Bergen Town?

Trollstice was the Bergen tradition where they would capture and eat Trolls on a special day. After the events of the original Trolls movie, this tradition is stopped.
