Mary Poppins Returns

In 1935 London, Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw) resides in his childhood home with his three children: Annabel (Pixie Davies), John (Nathanael Saleh), and Georgie (Joel Dawson). Following the passing of his wife, Kate, a year prior, he is supported by Ellen (Julie Walters), the long-time housekeeper, and his older sister Jane (Emily Mortimer). Unfortunately, Michael is struggling financially after taking out a loan from the Fidelity Fiduciary Bank, and its corrupt president, William Weatherall Wilkins (Colin Firth), warns him that his home will be repossessed if he fails to repay the full amount by Friday.

Determined to resolve their predicament, Michael and Jane recall that their father left behind shares in the bank, which could potentially cover the debt. As they search the house for the certificate proving their ownership, Michael uncovers a kite. However, he dismisses its significance and decides to give it away.

While at the park with Annabel and John, Georgie discovers the kite and attempts to fly it, leading to a remarkable moment where he is lifted into the sky alongside Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt). Choosing to be their new nanny, Mary begins by creating a whimsical bath that transports them to a breathtaking oceanic world; however, she insists that nothing extraordinary occurred.

Michael seeks to verify his shares at the bank, but Wilkins denies their existence, even going as far as to destroy the records in a fit of anger after Michael leaves his office. That evening, in a desperate attempt to fund their debt, Annabel and John plot to sell their mother’s cherished bowl. While struggling over it, the bowl gets damaged, showcasing their frantic efforts. Meanwhile, Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), a lively lamplighter, reunites with Mary Poppins and joins her and the kids on an enchanting adventure inside the painting on the bowl. They encounter animated characters and witness Mary Poppins conjure up the Royal Doulton Music Hall, but chaos ensues as Georgie gets kidnapped by a gang of unscrupulous animals. Annabel and John bravely set out to rescue him. Once they awaken in their beds, they question if their adventure had merely been a dream, but a fixed wheel in the bowl serves as proof of their reality.

The following day, Mary Poppins takes the children to visit her eccentric cousin Topsy (Meryl Streep), hoping to repair the bowl. However, they discover its limited monetary worth. Next, they visit the bank to return a briefcase to Michael, but upon realizing Wilkins’s nefarious plans to seize their home, Georgie interrupts a meeting. When Michael arrives, he chastises the children for their interference, unaware of the true danger they face. Mary Poppins then takes them home, guided by Jack and other lamplighters who engage them with their playful lingo.

At home, Michael chastises his children about the risk they posed to their family’s safety but is comforted by their reassurance that their mother’s spirit will always remain with them. As the Banks family prepares for their impending move, Michael discovers that Georgie used fragments of the shares certificate to patch the kite holes. Together, Michael and Jane rush to the bank, while Mary Poppins and the children accompany Jack and the lamplighters to Big Ben with a whimsical idea to “turn back time”. Climbing the clock tower, they successfully reverse its hands by five minutes, granting them the crucial time to reach the bank.

Despite their efforts, Michael and Jane still cannot access their shares due to missing signatures. Just then, Mr. Dawes Jr. (Dick Van Dyke), the head of the bank and Wilkins’s uncle, arrives and dismisses Wilkins for his corruption, unveiling that their father had invested Michael’s funds years ago. The returns are substantial enough to pay off the family’s debt, allowing them to keep both their shares and their beloved home.

The day after their victory, the Banks family go to the park to celebrate, purchasing balloons that lift them into the sky. During this joyous occasion, Michael reminisces about the magical adventures he and Jane had with Mary Poppins as children. When it’s time for Mary to leave, she gracefully ascends into the sky, bidding farewell as Michael and Jane express their heartfelt thanks for the unforgettable experiences.
