Max Hanson is a Chicago college student who channels his artistic talent into painting and drawing, while also shining on the hockey ice. The pull between these two passions creates tension at home: his mother, Sophie Hanson, has just secured a prized position with a local gallery after sacrificing her own career to raise the family, and she hopes her son will choose a path in art. His father, Ed Hanson, takes a more relaxed view, simply wanting him to be happy, a contrast that sets the tone for the family’s fragile balance.

While working at the neighborhood video store, Max is surrounded by two close friends, Orin Krieg and Kate Coppola. One ordinary day a new customer catches his eye, a girl who will soon become central to his life: Molly White. He tracks her down on campus after she introduces herself, already knowing his name from his hockey jersey, and she invites him to a party that night. What begins as a hopeful romance quickly reveals a darker underbelly as Max discovers Molly’s struggle with drug use, including her heroin habit, which she openly shares in their early days together.

The relationship intensifies in short order. Molly’s presence injects excitement into Max’s life, but it also disrupts everything else: his studies, his job at the video store, and even the home routine that revolves around his mother and his younger sister, Chloe Hanson. A doctor ultimately recommends treatment, but Max manages to slip away from the hospital and searches for Molly, a journey that ends in tragedy when he discovers her dead from a heroin overdose in a sleazy motel room.

Grief and guilt overwhelm him. He heads to Kate’s apartment, begging for money, and, when she refuses, he lashes out, even offering to prostitute himself. Kate ejects him, and in the resulting turmoil, he suffers a fall down the stairs. By morning, the family finds him, and he’s brought home with Kate by his side. The turning point arrives as the family commits to a month-long rehab plan. The process brings to light painful truths: Sophie admits she never truly saw Max for who he was because she was focused on perfection herself, while he learns that the longing he felt was for someone to say it was okay not to be perfect.

A doctor explains the road ahead, underscoring the difficulty of entering and sticking with a treatment program. In the end, Max’s loss becomes the catalyst for a deeper family reconciliation. He confronts the reality of Molly’s death, and the film closes on a note of cautious hope: as he prepares to begin rehab, he says goodbye to his brother and sister, and mother and father share a moment of understanding. The car pulls away, and a new chapter begins for a young man who must redefine who he is and what he wants to become, with the support of a family that finally believes in him.
