Trapito

During a violent storm, Salapin struggles to stay afloat in a muddy pool. Trapito, a living scarecrow hanging nearby, plucks him from danger and shelters him inside his dry, warm pocket. The act marks the unlikely beginning of their companionship.

The next morning, Trapito admits he is lonely and unsure what to do with his life. Salapin senses his longing and proposes they seek guidance from the wise Patriarch of the Birds. The owl concludes that Trapito lacks imagination and sets them on a journey beyond the field.

On the road to town, Trapito and Salapin meet Larguirucho, a friendly but clumsy farmer mouse who runs a bustling farm. He has many animals, including pigs, and welcomes them into his world. Their encounter sparks the start of a journey toward new adventures.

Larguirucho is treated to a meal by the innkeeper, but Ataúlfo the crow steals his money in the commotion. The loss leaves him with a looming debt and the threat that the innkeeper will butcher the mother pig if it isn't paid soon. The moment exposes the fragility of their livelihoods.

Larguirucho struggles to find work until he is hired as an assistant carpenter, giving him purpose and money to survive. He begins learning the trade, while Salapin watches, already curious about the world ahead. The small victory shows the start of his upward mobility.

A pirate crew led by Captain Mala Pata orders a peg leg, and the carpenter prepares it for delivery. In a mix-up at the shop, Larguirucho accidentally hands over a wrapped ham shaped like a peg leg. The mistake foreshadows a dangerous plan: the pirates will shanghai him and use Trapito as a figurehead.

Mala Pata's crew plans to shanghai Larguirucho and force Trapito into service as a figurehead. The mutiny is foiled with quick thinking by Larguirucho, Salapin, and the mother pig, turning Larguirucho into first mate and freeing Trapito. The dynamics aboard the pirate ship shift in their favor.

On a tropical island, they dive to the sea bottom in search of crystal tears. They discover Espumita, a mermaid who sheds the treasured tears, and learn that a Cruel Octopus and his crew threaten the ocean’s harmony. The Sea Horse is captured but rescued by the trio, and they earn a single crystal tear as a reward.

They return to Mala Pata's ship, but the pirate captain and his mate dive back into the sea to chase after more tears. The Cruel Octopus remains a looming threat as they sail toward home. Larguirucho's leadership stabilizes the crew for the final leg of the journey.

Back in town, Larguirucho uses the crystal tear to pay the innkeeper, resolving the debt and freeing the mother pig. He then returns to the farm with his pigs, completing a circle of hard work and resilience. The journey brings a sense of closure for many characters.

Salapin meets a female sparrow and falls in love, leaving the field with her to start a new life. Trapito is left lonely in the field, but Salapin promises something from afar, hinting at potential future connections. The separation marks a bittersweet end to their initial alliance.

The sparrow couple returns the next year with their chicks, and Trapito becomes a playmate to the young birds. The scarecrow finds companionship through the chicks, healing his loneliness in a small, hopeful way. The story closes with a renewed sense of life in the field.
