In 2107, the Bridgists exert absolute control over Earth as a galaxy-wide rebellion fights back. The battle culminates near Proximia 2 in the Alpha Centauri system, where the Bridgists destroy the rebel fleet and all life on Earth appears doomed. The remaining rebels launch a desperate time-travel shuttle that escapes to 1998, carrying Tunis and Norris.

Rand, along with Wingate, Frankel, and Uriah, are recruited to travel back to 1998 and kill Tunis. They are given a perilous deadline: 48 hours or their bio-implants will self-destruct, killing them.
