From Zhuang, China’s largest ethnic minority, the legend of Liu Sanjie – “third sister of the Liu family” – tells of a woman whose singing could calm anger and lift spirits. Passed down orally for generations, similar figures exist in other minority folklore. The tale gained fame with the 1960 musical film Liu Sanjie, a milestone in Chinese cinema.
