Kit, a Pulitzer-winning reporter, returns from Moscow to find his career in jeopardy. His editor Norman Mason fires him for incompetence after he fails to report Germany's invasion of Russia. The humiliation motivates Kit to chase a dangerous scoop to redeem himself.

Kit seeks out his girlfriend Christina Hill at her newspaper office in Washington. Their reunion is interrupted when Romanian informer Gregory Vanescu arrives with news of a promised scoop. The encounter pulls Kit toward a web of espionage and danger.

Nazi spies shoot Vanescu to prevent him from speaking and he vanishes into hiding. Kit takes the risk to pursue Vanescu and the truth behind the looming threat. The incident marks the start of a perilous chase.

Kit asks Christina’s roommate Sally Branch to fetch Christina's notebook, the red purse, and the green umbrella, and to meet at the Lincoln Memorial at midnight. Sally’s mission is crucial for obtaining Vanescu’s information without tipping off the spies. The plan signals a tense, covert exchange under cover of darkness.

On the way to the rendezvous, Kit inadvertently drives Christina to the Washington Monument instead of the Lincoln Memorial. The misdirection tests Sally’s timing and raises the tension of the night. Christina remains unaware of the blunder, pressing on toward the secret meeting.

As the meeting concludes, Nazi agents crash the scene and grab Sally’s notebook, aborting the exchange. Kit escorts Christina back to Sally’s apartment while Sally and friends await news. The seizure escalates the danger and intensifies the pursuit.

Nazis realize they can’t interpret Sally’s shorthand and abduct her from her apartment. Christina urges contacting the FBI, but Kit pretends to do so while continuing the chase for the scoop. Sally’s captivity heightens the stakes for everyone involved.

Kit goes to a nightclub to locate Vanescu and encounters Olga, who poses as Vanescu’s wife. Olga and Otto wait in a private room, attempting to unsettle Kit and extract the missing information. The encounter deepens the cat-and-mouse chase across the city.

Olga manipulates Kit toward an old Civil War veteran’s house, where he discovers Vanescu’s dead body. Otto’s attempt to break Kit’s nerve fails in the face of Kit’s resolve. The grim discovery confirms the spy ring’s lethal reach.

The spies drug Kit and compel him to marry Gloria, the Glow Girl, at the nightclub. Gloria is stabbed and dies after handing Kit a corsage, a clue he uses later to trace the plot. He also salvages the corsage box from Gloria’s dressing room.

Christina identifies perfume on Sally’s handkerchief and follows the scent to a beauty salon near the flower shop. She suspects Olga’s ownership and links her to the spy network. Her findings propel the investigation toward a decisive confrontation.

Olga is revealed to be running the beauty salon; Christina finds an address in her purse and realizes the connection. Kit is briefly held hostage in a salon room but escapes, and he overhears Axis agents discussing their plans in the showroom. The pieces converge toward a dramatic exposure of the conspiracy.

A climactic confrontation unfolds as Kit and Christina’s allies surge in—photographers, G-Men, and police flood the salon. The spies are defeated and arrested, and Kit and Christina share a kiss in victory. The post-scoop excitement hints at another Pulitzer Prize for the couple.
