Raymond Yale, David Roberts and Carla Smith, Claire van der Boom, are two married locals living on opposite sides of a quiet river in a small Australian town. Their secret romance blooms against a backdrop of ordinary life, where Raymond works as a foreman overseeing a new leisure-resort project for property developer Gil Hubbard, Bill Hunter, and Carla endures a controlling, petty gangster husband, Greg “Smithy” Smith, Anthony Hayes. They dream of leaving their marriages behind and starting fresh together, but the path to escape is blocked by money, danger, and the unpredictable consequences of their choices.

As the two lovers weigh the leap, Raymond quietly nurtures a plan to secure enough cash to fund a new life with Carla. His work at the construction site provides access to opportunities for under-the-table deals, especially with a volatile colleague named Barney, Kieran Darcy-Smith, who is entangled in the town’s shadow economy. Meanwhile, Carla must navigate the tension at home with Smithy, whose volatile mood and controlling nature help keep her trapped in a life she longs to escape. The couple’s illicit dealings become more urgent as both spouses remain unaware of just how far their respective lives may be pulled into danger.

The plan comes into motion when Carla steals a duffel bag stuffed with cash that she finds hidden in her home—a stash that Smithy had hidden away after a botched robbery by his gang. Ray decides that destroying the money would be a cleaner cover for the theft, so the plan involves arson: Billy, Joel Edgerton the town’s skilled arsonist, will set a fire to fake a faulty Christmas-light accident, while Carla seizes the money and Ray orchestrates everything from behind the scenes. The ambition is simple on the surface: fake a disaster, cover the loss as a burned disaster, and disappear with enough capital to begin anew far from the reach of their tangled pasts.

The town’s Christmas celebration provides the perfect cover for the staged blaze. Carla slips away to complete the theft, but a crucial moment interrupts her when she overhears Smithy phoning his mother, Rita Smith, Eliza Logan, and asking her to come to the house to feed his dog. Realizing the stakes have just escalated, Carla alerts Ray, who races to contact Billy. He can only reach Billy’s sister Lily, Hanna Mangan-Lawrence, as his phone dies. Lily attempts to intervene, but she cannot warn Billy in time. Billy arrives at the location and begins the break-in, unaware that Smithy’s mother has fallen asleep on the lounge—a sleeping figure who becomes part of the deadly chain when the fire starts.

The resulting blaze claims Rita Smith’s life and tears a path of fear through the town. The crime becomes personal and immediate: the plan to steal money spirals into murder, with Lily unintentionally failing to stop Billy, and Smithy, devastated by his mother’s death, learning that the cash was stolen from his own stash. He sets out to uncover the perpetrators, while Ray’s life grows increasingly unstable as a relentless blackmail campaign begins. Someone starts sending him Christmas cards that threaten exposure and demand a ten-thousand-dollar payoff, turning Ray’s world into a rolling nightmare of suspicion, paranoia, and danger.

The truth behind the blackmail gradually comes to light: Barney and his wife have been manipulating the town’s fortunes, disguising their own racketeering as a series of kickbacks and then using the fear of exposure to squeeze more money from those around them. The net tightens on Ray and Carla as more people learn fragments of the truth, and each new revelation seems to end in tragedy. In this climate of fear, Ray becomes more entangled in a deadly cycle—every time someone uncovers another secret, someone else dies in what appear to be accidents or acts of retaliation tied to Ray’s efforts to shield himself and Carla.

With the net closing in, Ray and Carla decide to run away together, hoping to outrun the consequences of their choices. They head to Carla’s home with Billy’s arrival looming as a last-test of loyalty and fear. Carla hands over the rest of the money, the price of their escape, to Billy in a moment of tense negotiation. But the confrontation explodes when Smithy comes home, gun drawn, and a violent confrontation erupts. In the heated exchange, Smithy is killed in the ensuing firefight as Billy fights to retain control of the money. As Ray attempts to wrest the gun from Billy, a sudden, fatal shot strikes Carla in the head. Billy departs into the night, leaving Ray to mourn the devastating collapse of their plan.

In the aftermath, the town reels from the cascade of violence, deceit, and betrayal. Ray, haunted and broken, walks away through the darkness, carrying the weight of Carla’s memory and the realization that the choices made in pursuit of a fresh start have destroyed everything they hoped to achieve. The story leaves viewers with a stark meditation on desire, loyalty, and the price of living a lie, where an ordinary life in a sunlit Australian town can so quickly spiral into a catastrophe that touches every corner of a close-knit community.
