The Outfit

Two hitmen drive to Eddie Macklin's house and shoot him as he builds a brick wall in the backyard. The assassination marks the Outfit's brutal reach and triggers a vendetta that pulls Macklin into a dangerous game of retaliation.

After Earl's release from prison in Illinois, Bett picks him up and drives him to a motel. Bett informs him that Eddie Macklin has been executed by the Outfit, signaling that they are already marked targets.

Earl realizes the motel stay is a setup, and when one of the hitmen who killed his brother bursts into the room, Earl ambushes him and tortures him for information. The confrontation confirms the level of danger surrounding them.

Macklin decides not to execute the surviving hitman and instead sends him back to Chicago as a warning. The move demonstrates Macklin's cold pragmatism in dealing with threats.

Bett confesses that the Outfit tortured her and threatened to scar her face if she didn't lure Earl to the motel. The confession deepens the sense of peril surrounding all involved.

Macklin and Cody decide to keep robbing the Outfit, with Bett driving their getaways. They begin plotting a new wave of heists aimed at undermining Outfit operations.

At a poker game, Macklin and Cody strike while Jake Menner is playing. Menner explains that Eddie and Earl's bank robbery was an Outfit cover, turning the contract into simple retribution. Macklin shoots Menner in the hand as revenge for Bett.

Menner tells his boss Mailer that the Outfit has a problem that must be dealt with, and Mailer insists that it is Menner's responsibility to solve it. The tension between enforcement and leadership widens.

The hitmen who killed Eddie are dispatched to kill Macklin's old partner Cody at his diner. Cody distracts them by noting the town sheriff is present, and he and Macklin decide to team up to keep robbing the Outfit, with Bett as driver.

Macklin and Cody target a dive restaurant that supposedly has no safe. As they leave with the money, a cook hurls a cleaver and three gunmen ambush them outside. Bett mows two of the attackers down, and the trio escapes with the cash.

To replace their car, they go to Chemey's shop for a new vehicle. Chemey's sister-in-law makes a pass at Cody, and when he rejects her, she claims he tried to rape her, triggering a confrontation that Chemey defuses. They leave in a new car.

To hit a larger target, Cody poses as a mailman and Macklin as a maintenance man to slip into the Outfit's back rooms and rob the safe. They corner Mailer at a horse auction; he reluctantly agrees to pay $250,000 but warns Macklin to stop.

Mailer becomes furious that Macklin got so close and orders them killed. The supposed payoff arrives, but the briefcase is filled with newspaper instead of money, revealing a setup, and they escape by tripping a fire alarm.

An ambush on a roadside, led by Menner, ends with Cody and Macklin killing Menner and his men. In the melee, Bett is shot and killed, fueling Macklin's resolve for a final strike.

Enraged, Macklin plans a last-ditch assault on Mailer's well-guarded home. They hijack an Outfit car and head to Mailer's residence, where Cody plants a bomb under a table. Mailer ambushes Cody in the hallway, and Macklin finishes Mailer as the bomb goes off; posing as medics, they load Cody into an ambulance and drive away.
