Ivan Kouznetsoff, a Russian engineer, goes to England before World War II to develop an ice‑breaker propeller. Initially dismissive of Britons as shallow, his blunt humor alienates his hosts, especially Ann Tisdall, whose grandfather owns the shipyard. Over time he discovers their warmth, wit and resolve, winning their friendship. As war erupts and Nazi Germany attacks Russia, a romance blossoms between Ivan and Ann, symbolizing the growing cultural bond between the two nations.
