The Dark

Adèlle travels to Wales to be with her husband James and work on repairing her relationship with their daughter Sarah. The visit sets the stage for a tense family reunion against a landscape steeped in legends and cliffs.

At a cliffside, they discover a strange memorial with a missing plate and the name Annwyn etched on it. A local explanation ties Annwyn to Welsh mythology as an afterlife, hinting at a danger beyond the ordinary world.

Dafydd, a local man, explains that Annwyn represents an afterlife and that the memorial's missing plate hints at a deeper, ominous legend. He signals that legends may have real consequences for the living.

Sarah disappears on the beach, and a girl who resembles her, named Ebrill, emerges from the sea. Ebrill is described as the long-dead daughter of a local shepherd who once served as the town's pastor.

Ebrill’s backstory reveals that her father sacrificed her to the ocean in the belief that she would return from Annwyn, bringing Paradise. The tale explains why Ebrill is back and suggests a malevolent presence accompanies her.

Dafydd is introduced as one of the followers who did not throw himself off the cliff, a choice that haunts him. His knowledge of the shepherd's cult links him to the dangerous circumstances surrounding Ebrill's return.

Adèlle concludes that Ebrill is the living substitute for Sarah, explaining the eerie resemblance. She realizes that the threat to Sarah is real and connected to the legends surrounding Annwyn.

In a bid to rescue her daughter, Adèlle decides to confront the danger and they both head toward Annwyn by leaping off the cliffs. James protests, but he cannot stop them from pursuing the mythic underworld.

Inside Annwyn, it is revealed that Sarah had attempted suicide after an argument with her mother before the Wales trip. Adèlle pleads for a second chance with her daughter.

Ebrill and her father perform trepanation on Adèlle to draw out the evil within her. The procedure marks a descent into the realm's corruption that carries the burden of every character's past.

Adèlle frees herself from her bonds and searches for Sarah, who is locked behind a door in Annwyn. She retrieves a key, apologizes for her selfishness, and moves to unlock the imprisoned girl.

Adèlle unlocks the door and rescues Sarah from Annwyn, but her sacrifice costs her life as she disappears from the realm. The act successfully frees Sarah but at a devastating personal price.

Back in the living world, Sarah returns with her mother, yet she is tainted by the same evil that haunted Ebrill. The film closes on the grim reminder that some rescues come with lasting wounds and unresolved threats.
