Set during the American Civil War, the story follows a Virginia colonel, played by Keenan, and his weak‑willed son, portrayed by Charles Ray. The father forces his son at gunpoint to join the Confederate army, where the terrified young man deserts in the heat of battle. The film examines his desperate struggle to confront and overcome his cowardice.
