A violinist named Anna works at a music school with her instrument-maker husband and their 10-year-old son, Jonas. She becomes intensely invested in a young student, Alexander, believing he possesses exceptional talent. Anna dedicates herself to preparing him for a crucial exam, a decision that creates tension with her own son and places a strain on her marriage. As she has an affair with a colleague and her relationship crumbles, Alexander becomes a proxy for her ambitions, leading to a tragic outcome on the day of the exam.
