A talented violinist in a provincial Polish orchestra—whose husband is the ensemble’s director—encounters a world‑renowned symphony conductor while visiting the United States. The conductor, once in love with the violinist’s mother and a slightly unstable hypochondriac, returns to Poland to lead the orchestra. He tries to revive his past romance by using the violinist as a surrogate for her mother, provoking both professional and personal resentment from her husband.
