The Ware Case

Hubert Ware is a profligate baronet whose life has long been built on mounting debts, a smooth tongue, and a pattern of avoiding creditors rather than facing consequences. He schemes around a supposed guarantor, claiming that his wife’s wealthy brother Eustace Ede will cover the obligations, and he’s given three months to square the accounts or risk bankruptcy. His wife, Meg Ware, has spent years pushing him toward responsibility and a real plan to settle what’s owed, only to realize that Hubert has no intention of retrenching. Their friend and confidant, the ambitious barrister Michael Adye, who is in love with Meg, also urges Hubert to get his house in order, hoping to spare Meg from a life wrecked by debt.

Rather than address his financial mess, Hubert chooses escapism—planning a Cannes holiday with Meg. She resists at first, but Hubert is convinced she’ll yield, as she has before. Yet this time Meg decides to stand her ground, choosing to stay and try to sort out the family finances herself. Hubert soon departs on another spree of affairs, leaving Meg to confront the consequences.

Meg comes to see that the only way to salvage the estate is to sell their ancestral home. A prospective buyer hints she would have to deal with rumors of Hubert’s past affairs, a revelation that threatens Meg’s trust in him. Michael, who has long known about Hubert’s infidelity, tries to support Meg and urges her to consider independence, though their closeness becomes a point of quiet tension between them. A tense negotiation ensues: Eustace presses for a quick, below-market sale to protect the family fortune, while Michael speaks up for Meg’s autonomy and for her own happiness. A moment of levity arises when Meg jokes about throttling Eustace, only to have Michael remind her that her husband’s wealth gives him a dangerous sense of impunity.

Meanwhile, Hubert returns with a troubling financial misstep: he has cashed hundreds of pounds in cheques in Cannes, and the cashier’s judgment on who to trust raises a hint of danger for the case ahead. When Hubert is served with papers in a divorce proceeding connected to his former mistress, he breathes a sigh of relief at first, thinking he’s escaped trouble—only to realize Meg will learn about his dishonesty and deception.

Hubert’s temptation to tighten his grip on power resurfaces as a genuine buyer arrives to view the house. He enlists Eustace to stay the night, rationalizing that the arrangement isn’t entirely bad. Meg, torn between love and duty, decides to tell Hubert that she wants a divorce, but his immediate response is to insist that, despite the affairs, she is the one person who truly matters to him and that he will change. A quiet, painful moment follows, and Meg, though uncertain, recognizes that her husband is “a man of straw” in some respects, yet she cannot leave him.

That evening, outside by the lake, a troubling cry is heard, and Eustace’s body is later discovered in the water. Michael dives in to search, but the man who has been the catalyst for so much trouble is dead. With Eustace gone, Meg inherits the family wealth and uses it to settle Hubert’s debts, but a new threat looms: a warrant for murder in Eustace’s death.

In court, Michael defends Hubert with skill, countering the prosecution’s case, until a critical detail appears: a ring found in the lake matches a bruise on Eustace’s forehead. Hubert explains he wore the ring the day after the death to discuss weight loss, but Meg is visibly shocked by this revelation. The jury delivers a not-guilty verdict, and Hubert returns home amid public cheers, a charged sense of relief mixing with unease. He overhears talk of Meg and Michael, and the crowd’s adulation gives him pause about his own actions.

On the balcony, Hubert addresses the crowd, acknowledging that he has gotten away with murder and hinting at double jeopardy. He then turns his gaze to Meg and Michael, whispers “Good luck,” and, overwhelmed by the tangled web of guilt, tragedy, and consequence, climbs to the railing and ends his life with a final, fatal leap.
