In a quiet city flat, a convicted female blackmailer is found dead, and the detectives’ attention immediately fixes on three men who might have had a motive: Hugh Allen, a struggling author who was involved with the deceased; Ronald Parker, Allen’s publisher who had been blackmailed out of thousands of pounds while she worked for him; and Jonathan Roche, a playwright who knew the woman but won’t disclose the exact nature of their acquaintance. With no solid alibis for the time of the murder, the seasoned Inspector Thornton Inspector Thornton decides to shadow them, convinced that the culprit will eventually reveal themselves through their actions.
Meanwhile, a tangle of romance deepens the intrigue. Alycia Roche, Roche’s wife, is weary of her loveless marriage and begins an affair with Allen. Alycia urges Allen to play a role in Roche’s new radio venture, a episodic program titled The Voice of Merrill, and proposes that Allen narrate the broadcasts. She then masterminds a plan to pass off the work as Allen’s own creation to give his career a boost. The plot thickens as Alycia poisons Roche with his own medications, hoping his death will be blamed on his medical condition rather than foul play.
Thornton is not ignorant of Alycia’s affair, and when Roche dies, the autopsy is set in motion. The medical examiner’s findings point to natural causes, and the couple believes they have dodged suspicion. Yet Roche had previously learned that Allen was the anonymous “Merrill” and grew enraged at not being able to deny it publicly, plotting a quiet, posthumous revenge. As the final episode of The Voice of Merrill goes live, Thornton realizes the storyline mirrors the truth in a way that could reveal the blackmailer’s killer.
The investigation winds toward a tense confrontation where motive, opportunity, and the public-facing fiction of Roche’s radio project intersect, forcing each character to confront what they did, what they intended to do, and what the final broadcast might reveal about the real killer hidden in plain sight.
