Set in 1918, a traveling state executioner roams the South with a portable electric chair. Jonas Candide performs his grim duties in Mississippi, preaching and hawking his trade to convince condemned men to accept their fate before electrocuting them. When he is assigned his first female prisoner, his certainty and sense of purpose are shaken.
