The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada

In the sun-scorched landscapes of South Texas, a lone man clad in army gear halts his jeep on a dusty road. Accompanied by a companion, they spot coyotes in the distance, scavenging along the rocky outcrop. As his friend takes aim at one of the coyotes, they approach the scene, intrigued by the unfolding mystery.

The narrative centers on Peter “Pete” Perkins, portrayed by Tommy Lee Jones, who ventures to a hospital to uncover the truth behind the death of his friend, Melquíades Estrada, played by Julio Cedillo. As a cowboy employed by Pete on his ranch, Melquíades’ body, buried in a shallow grave, presents a harrowing sight that leaves Pete nauseated by the brutality of death. Meanwhile, the local police, distracted by trivial pursuits such as flirting and apprehending undocumented immigrants, remain indifferent to what is clearly a murder case.

Determined to obtain justice for Melquíades, Pete confronts Mike, compelling him to exhume the body and embark on a journey to El Tostón, the hometown of Melquíades. This road trip becomes fraught with danger as the authorities pursue them, making for a gripping chase through the unforgiving terrain.

As the men endure unpredictable challenges, including Mike’s cowardice and encountering a blind old man who offers assistance, their complicated relationship develops amidst the rotting remains of Melquíades.
