In 1914, mining engineer Richard Hannay is staying in Britain before returning to South Africa when his neighbor Colonel Scudder bursts in, warning that Prussian sleeper agents plan to spark World War I by assassinating a visiting foreign minister. Scudder is killed and Hannay is framed. Fleeing to Scotland, he joins Alex Mackenzie to clear his name and stop the plot, while being pursued by Chief Superintendent Lomas and the mastermind Appleton, a senior government official.
