The Seven Year Hitch

From childhood friends to inseparable partners, Jennifer and Kevin have shared a bond since they were six. After Jennifer graduates and begins a charity career, she welcomes her long-time friend to live with her in the house she just bought, hoping he’ll find his footing. Seven years pass, and their relationship remains strictly platonic as Jennifer climbs the career ladder while Kevin still works as a golf caddie, patiently waiting for a breakthrough. Jennifer is comfortable with Kevin marching to his own beat, but her new boyfriend Bryce dislikes having Kevin around. Bryce is an arrogant corporate climber who wants Jennifer to eject Kevin and asks her to marry him after only six months together, partly to leverage Jennifer’s angelic reputation to win favor with his boss, Mrs. Von Hoffman.

When Kevin catches Bryce cheating, he vows to spare Jennifer a unhappy ride and, with help from his brother, Jeremy — who’s in law school — and the meddling guidance of their neighbor Mr. Henderson, uncover a surprising truth: Kevin and Jennifer are legally married in a common-law sense, having lived together for seven years and meeting other requirements. Jennifer is skeptical at first, but her friend—the lawyer Sally—confirms Kevin’s claim.

A workplace misstep becomes pivotal when Kevin, during dinner with Jennifer’s important client, Mr. Fujimura, introduces himself as Jennifer’s husband. The dinner goes smoothly, and Kevin unexpectedly wins Mr. Fujimura’s favor, helping Jennifer secure the deal. He even stages a small “wedding reception” at Jennifer’s home for their close friends, further blurring the line between friendship and partnership.

When Bryce returns from a Chicago trip and learns of the common-law marriage, he erupts, calling Kevin a parasite and demanding Jennifer sever ties with him otherwise their wedding is off. Sally advises Jennifer to push Kevin to sign papers waiving the common-law claim, claiming he’s always a quitter. Jennifer assigns tasks to test Kevin’s resolve, from small errands to building a gazebo, hoping to frighten him into leaving.

A veterinary scare with Jennifer’s golden retriever Napoleon heightens the stakes. Kevin sacrifices a chance to pitch his own idea to an investor to take Napoleon to the vet, while Bryce refuses to take time off work—he’s busy with his mistress—and dismisses Napoleon as “just a dog.” > “just a dog”

Afterward, Kevin returns a purse to Jennifer at a party with Bryce and his business circle, and publicly pushes back against Bryce’s condescending treatment of Jennifer. The moment stirs something in Jennifer, who tends to Kevin’s wounds after their confrontation. Kevin admits he’s falling in love, but Jennifer insists Bryce is the man she’s meant to marry. The next morning, Kevin signs the waiver and leaves, hoping Jennifer will understand.

Jennifer senses an emptiness without Kevin and starts reevaluating Bryce’s priorities. At the wedding run-through, Bryce blurts out that the engagement ring is the biggest rock in town, contradicting his earlier claims about the ring’s sentimental value. He cannot recall what his earlier vows were, and when Jennifer asks whether he knows her favorite color, he hedges—an answer she cannot accept. In a bold act, she drops her engagement ring into Bryce’s drink and heads out. She races to Jeremy’s house, where Kevin had been staying, only to find him at the bus station as he prepares to leave for school. She reaches the station just as the bus pulls away, and in a quiet, hopeful moment, she finds him still surrounded by people and admits her true feelings—their kiss sealing a new beginning.

The film closes with the couple’s wedding, attended by friends and family, including Mr. Davidson as a guest who teases that he’ll see Kevin’s game “in the store by Christmas.” Sally and Jeremy set aside their differences and begin a new chapter together, while Kevin finally kisses his lawfully wedded wife as everyone watches the union celebrate a future built on trust, partnership, and more than a little stubborn love.
