As Julianne “Jules” Potter (28) nears her significant milestone birthday, her world is suddenly shaken by a pivotal phone call from her lifelong friend Michael O’Neal (a sportswriter). Michael is on the brink of marrying college student Kimmy Wallace, with the wedding just days away. This news sends Jules into a tailspin, as the two had once made a promise that if they were still single by the age of 28, they would marry each other—a pact that now feels threatened. Faced with this reality, Jules becomes determined to thwart Michael’s upcoming nuptials, fueled by her long-hidden feelings for him.
Embarking on a whirlwind trip to Chicago, Jules reconnects with Michael and meets Kimmy, who unexpectedly enlists her as the maid of honor. This new role presents both an opportunity and a challenge for Jules. Her initial attempts to disrupt their happiness begin with a karaoke bar fiasco meant to embarrass Kimmy, which ends up failing spectacularly. Undeterred, Jules cleverly convinces Kimmy to seek a job from Michael’s boss, but this plan also backfires unexpectedly.
With growing frustration, Jules seeks advice from her trusted friend George Downes. Inspired by George’s suggestion, she plans to confess her feelings to Michael but ends up concocting an elaborate ruse instead: she pretends to be engaged to George, who is secretly gay, hoping this will spark jealousy in Michael. This charade leads to a cringe-worthy moment during lunch with the wedding party when George’s unexpected performance of > “I Say a Little Prayer” results in uncontrollable laughter throughout the restaurant. After George exits, Jules admits that her fake relationship is over, leading Michael to express his own burgeoning jealousy.
As the opportunity to confess slips away, Jules and Michael share a heartfelt dance while he sings their shared anthem, “The Way You Look Tonight.” On the eve of the wedding, Jules takes a bold step by accessing Kimmy’s father’s email account to create and save a deceptive message meant for Michael’s boss. However, chaos ensues when Kimmy’s father accidentally sends the email, pushing Jules into a corner where she must fabricate a story to gain Michael’s help in resolving the issue.
Arriving at the office only to find it locked, Jules and Michael receive crushing news when Michael’s boss reveals the fraudulent email. Enraged, Michael calls off the wedding with Kimmy, leaving Jules’ world turned upside down. As dawn breaks over the city, a new reality hits Jules: neither Michael nor Kimmy has mentioned the cancelled wedding to anyone. Seizing this as an opportunity, she plans to manipulate the situation further, but finds that both Michael and Kimmy are resolute in their commitment, deciding to go through with their marriage.
Refusing to accept defeat, Jules bravely confesses her profound feelings for Michael in a moment of emotional clarity. Kimmy witnesses this heartfelt revelation, and in her heartbreak, speeds away, prompting Michael to chase after her. Meanwhile, Jules commandeers a caterer’s truck, determined to pursue both her love and her friend.
In the midst of the chaotic chase, Jules has a brief moment to call George, who offers sage advice, urging her to allow Michael and Kimmy the chance to reconcile before the wedding, teaching Jules the importance of not being entrapped in a cycle of heartache.
Following George’s guidance, Jules ultimately finds Michael at Chicago Union Station. In a moment of raw honesty, she lays bare her involvement and seeks his forgiveness. Moved by her vulnerability, Michael forgives her and shares the deeper meaning behind his proposal to Kimmy, which took place at the very same station.
Determined to make things right, Jules tracks Kimmy down at Comiskey Park, where they confront each other. In an emotional exchange, Jules sincerely apologizes, reassuring Kimmy of Michael’s true feelings. The tension dissipates between them, allowing for reconciliation and paving the way for the wedding to continue.
As the newlyweds share their first dance, Jules, now Kimmy’s maid of honor, delivers a touching speech that brings tears to the audience. In a selfless gesture, she allows Michael and Kimmy to claim “The Way You Look Tonight” as their special song.
As the evening progresses, Jules bids farewell to Michael, both ready to embrace the uncertain futures that lie ahead. Just when the night seems to reach its conclusion, George arrives unexpectedly at the reception, and the two friends find themselves back on the dance floor, enveloped in the magic of the moment.
