The story opens with Leo lying in bed, completely oblivious to the persistent ringing of the phone and the buzzing of the doorbell. His daughter, Molly, enters the room and questions why he is ignoring the noise, while Leo merely mutters to himself as his caretaker, Xenia, vacuums the area. It becomes clear that Leo is suffering from dementia, a condition that makes it incredibly difficult for him to focus or prepare for his necessary medical appointments.
Eventually, Leo and Molly manage to get into a taxi to reach his appointment. However, the visit is fraught with difficulty; at the dentist's office, Leo fails to follow the basic instructions provided by the medical staff and suffers an episode of incontinence. After Molly helps her father get changed and secures another taxi, tragedy strikes when Leo stumbles out of the passenger door and hits his head. He is immediately rushed to the emergency room via ambulance. While there, Molly's mother, Rita, harshly chastises her ex-husband for his erratic behavior. This leads to a heated argument between Molly, Rita, and Leo's attending physician, all while Leo remains completely detached, fixating solely on the memory of his dead dog, Néstor.
Following his discharge from the hospital, Molly takes Leo to Costco. While she is distracted by an important phone call from her boss, Leo disappears. Molly eventually finds him sobbing, tightly clutching a dog that he believes is Néstor. The actual owner of the dog accuses Leo of attempting to steal the pet and directs several racially charged insults toward him. Security guards quickly tackle Leo, though they eventually release him once Molly explains the reality of his medical condition.
The struggle continues when Molly takes Leo to see an optometrist, where he once again fails to comply with instructions. Upon exiting, Molly receives devastating news from her boss: her project has been handed over to someone else. Overwhelmed, she confesses to her father that she cannot go on pretending anymore. That night, Leo wanders out of his apartment and roams the streets barefoot. After a frantic search, Molly is relieved when he is eventually rescued by two taxi drivers.
The narrative then shifts into a series of memories or delusions. Leo's wife, Dolores, pleads with him to get out of bed and prepare for the day. In the kitchen, he discovers her arranging flowers into a bag before she drives off in their truck. Leo chases after her, and as they drive, the two bicker over which road to take. In a state of total delirium, Leo exits the vehicle, and Dolores drives away, leaving him stranded on a desolate desert road. Leo eventually manages to hitchhike into town on the back of a maize truck.
That night, Leo encounters a Day of the Dead celebration at a local cemetery. Guided by Dolores, he finds the grave of their deceased son, Néstor. Overcome with grief, Leo breaks down, blaming himself for the boy's death. In a poignant moment, Dolores and Leo share a tearful embrace, reflecting on their shared sorrow and the deep longing to have their son back.
Later, Leo is seen sitting by the sea at a tavern managed by his friend Mikael. There, he engages in conversation with a German tourist named Anni, who reminds him of his daughter. They discuss an unfinished novel Leo is writing—a story about a man forced to choose between returning to his home or continuing a life of exile. Throughout the day, a frenzied Leo repeatedly seeks Anni's opinion on his writing, which begins to annoy her friends. During their interactions, Leo is asked a pivotal question: is he truly comfortable with giving up his family in order to write? Leo finds himself unable to provide an answer.
As Anni and her companions board a nighttime party cruise, Leo secretly attempts to follow them, rowing his own small boat into the open sea. He pushes himself to the point of exhaustion but is unable to keep pace with the massive ship. The following morning, a group of fishermen discover Leo dead in his rowboat.
In the final sequence, the police deliver Leo's body back to Molly, who takes him back to his apartment. He begins to recount various stories that he believes are running parallel to his own existence, including his early marriage in Mexico and a sudden, unexpected death in Greece. Molly reveals the truth: he was indeed married to a woman named Dolores before emigrating to the United States, and he had run away to Greece around the time Molly was born, only returning after realizing his mistake. While Molly sits by his bed and promises to stay by his side, the scene shifts to a parallel version of Molly, who silently packs her belongings and walks out of Leo's apartment for good.
