The Return of Dr. Mabuse

Inspector Lohmann, Gert Fröbe, eagerly hoped for a peaceful fishing holiday, but those plans are abruptly interrupted when a murder investigation lands on his desk. A man is found dead in a railway tunnel, and the victim is revealed to be an Interpol courier who was carrying crucial proof of the Chicago Syndicate’s planned collaboration with a European criminal network. The attached case, chained to the courier’s body and now missing, sets off a larger web of intrigue that crosses continents.

From Washington, the stakes rise. A female representative of the Syndicate, Laura Solari as Mrs. Pizarro, is said to be in Europe to meet with European criminals, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation plans to send Special Agent Joe Como to liaise with local authorities. As Lohmann pieces things together, he Corners a lead by meeting Alberto Sandro, a prisoner who is tied to the European criminal circle.

The case grows darker when Mrs. Pizarro herself is murdered by a flamethrower. Among the witnesses at the scene is a female reporter, Maria Sabrehm, Daliah Lavi, who asks questions that the seasoned inspector tries to dodge. Also present is Joe Como, whose presence adds another layer of tension to the investigation. The sole witness to the crucial events is a blind man who recalls the distinctive sound of a man with a wooden leg just before the flamethrower fire erupts.

In the wake of the murder, Lohmann discovers a crucial clue: a book found on the charred body of Mrs. Pizarro titled The Devil’s Anatomy, written by Reverend Brietenstein of St. Thomas Church. As he flips through its pages, he learns a chilling thesis—though the Devil is a spirit, he can possess the bodies of other men. The church becomes a focal point of the mystery when the voice of Dr. Mabuse, the infamous criminal mastermind, crackles through the church’s speaker system, warning Lohmann to abandon his pursuit.

Inside the church, Joe Como engages in a tense exchange with Mabuse, who is presented as Nick Scappio, the Chicago Syndicate’s representative there to negotiate a drug shipment. The Syndicate’s condition is clear: they will cooperate only if they can witness undeniable proof of the drug’s power.

Following the trail of the blind witness, Lohmann pursues further testimony, but the witness is run over and killed before he can provide more. Como and Lohmann track the killer to Alberto Sandro, who—seemingly escaped from prison—has orchestrated the disruption. Recapturing him, the authorities uncover a startling truth: Sandro’s cell is not the source of the body that was found in his cell—the body is the dead man with the wooden leg.

The heart of the case lies in Mabuse’s drug, a mind-control device developed by Maria Sabrehm’s father, a scientist imprisoned in the same facility as Sandro. The drug can turn ordinary people into zombies who can be commanded through radio transmissions. Mabuse is shown to possess not just an isolated cadre of criminals who can slip in and out of the prison, but a wider network that can be deployed to commit crimes with no memory of their actions afterward.

As Lohmann presses ahead, his assistant obtains the fingerprints of Como and sends them to FBI headquarters, who declare that the man calling himself Como is not the real Agent Como. Como/Scappio is sent to the prison for direct interrogation. There, the inspector uncovers Mabuse’s ominous plan: the Chicago Syndicate will witness the mind-control drug’s demonstration on Friday the 13th, the film’s premiere date. On that night, every prisoner would be injected, armed, and released in a coordinated effort to launch an armed assault aimed at destroying a nearby nuclear power plant.

This escalating sequence of revelations casts a shadow over everyone involved, from the crime syndicates and their European counterparts to the German authorities and the prison warden. Fausto Tozzi portrays Warden Wolf, whose control over the prison’s industrial laundry and inmate movements becomes a critical lever for Mabuse’s plans. Meanwhile, the theoretical and practical reach of Mabuse’s influence—through the mind-control drug and its radio-based commands—threatens to turn a quiet, controlled environment into a battlefield with far-reaching consequences.

As the plot thickens, Lohmann and his allies find themselves racing against time to prevent a catastrophic outbreak of violence and the potential destruction of the nuclear facility. The intertwining strands of murder, mind control, espionage, and the ever-present specter of Mabuse’s influence create a tense, methodical thriller in which every lead could unravel the conspiracy or pull the plug on the inspector’s pursuit. The film, anchored by a calculated interplay of suspicion, intrigue, and dramatic reveals, builds toward a dramatic confrontation that tests loyalty, truth, and the limits of control in a world where the mind can be manipulated as easily as a switch is flipped.
