The Red Lanterns

The film opens with Eleni, Jenny Karezi and Petros, Dimitris Papamichael, sharing a bright moment at an Athens amusement park, celebrating a private affair that has drawn them together despite the risks it carries in a society that tends to look the other way.

Soon after, Eleni returns to her secret workplace, The Red Lanterns, where she and many other women work as prostitutes. Each woman carries a distinct backstory that threads through the narrative: Marina, Katerina Helmy, comes from a village far from the city and moves through love and longing for Doris, her controlling “manager”; Anna, Alexandra Ladikou, is deeply in love with Captain Nicholas, and she has a child with him who remains hidden from his knowledge; Mary, Mairi Hronopoulou, the eldest among the group, carries herself with a more masculine air and resilience; a young client named Angelos, Faidon Georgitsis, falls for Mary and their affair heats up with fleeting passion. Meanwhile, Marina’s heart belongs to Doris, who runs the house with a firm hand but also a soft tenderness; Katerina, Iro Kyriakaki, is a kindhearted, poor cleaning woman who endures abuse and neglect from her own husband, an older man who is institutionalized; Mihalis, George Foundas, Eleni’s manager, is secretly in love with her, a feeling she despises; and Myrsini, Eleni Anousaki, a 16-year-old who arrives after being pursued by a cop, becomes entangled in the darker currents of the house as Mihalis attempts and fails to win her over.

On Christmas Eve, tensions flare: Angelos proposes to Mary, who rebukes him with cynicism and a brittle smile. Anna reveals to others that she has a child with Captain Nicholas, a truth that remains difficult for the others to fully accept. Anna’s confidences ripple through the home as Helen receives news that her son Alex is a reminder of a life outside The Red Lanterns. Doris’s departure shakes Marina, who breaks down in tears, threatening to end her own life. Eleni returns from a romantic dinner with Petros, and when Petros follows her and discovers her secret, he strikes out in anger, leaving her to weep as the night grows heavier around them.

Gradually, the house matriarchs close the door on that world as The Red Lanterns shut down. Anna clings to a letter from Captain Nicholas, only to learn that the entire Eternal Ship crew, including Captain Nicholas, perished in a fierce storm, a blow that reverberates through the lives of everyone left behind. Mary, Marina, and Myrsine search for a place of their own where they can continue to live and work, while Mihalis makes a final, desperate attempt to win Eleni back, a bid that ultimately gives way to a fragile reconciliation between Eleni and Petros, renewing their bond and a sense of hope for the future.

The film closes with Katerina leaving The Red Lanterns alongside her husband, who is poor but content. As they walk away, he asks softly, “Isn’t life beautiful?” and she answers with quiet acceptance, “It’s fine.”
