The Red Detachment of Women

Wu Qionghua fires at Nan Batian because she recognizes him as her former oppressor from when she was a maidservant in his household. Earlier, Changqing rescues her from Batian's household, establishing the personal connection that fuels her impulsive action.

Hong Changqing is wounded and captured during the Red Army's retreat as they evades the KMT brigade sent to crush them on Hainan Island. Despite being captured, he refuses to surrender and faces death with unwavering bravery, inspiring his comrades with his sacrifice.

His earlier disguised missions into Batian's fort establish his willingness to take risks for the revolutionary cause.

During the second infiltration operation, the Red Detachment successfully captures Nan Batian alive inside his fort. However, Batian manages to escape through a secret tunnel that leads out of the fortress, allowing him to flee before the detachment can secure him properly.

The first visit to Batian's estate establishes his fortified compound, hinting at defensive infrastructure.

After witnessing Hong Changqing's brave sacrifice and death while refusing to surrender, Wu Qionghua returns to the encampment with hardened resolve. Her growth through the peasant movements and her demonstrated commitment lead the detachment to choose her as the next CCP representative, making her the leader who will organize the final operation against Nan Batian.

Her application to join the Chinese Communist Party earlier signals her formal commitment to leadership within the revolutionary movement.

After Nan Batian reports his defeat at the hands of the Red Detachment to the local government, the Kuomintang responds by dispatching a military brigade to eliminate the Red Army forces on Hainan Island. This represents the escalation of official government forces against the communist insurgents, forcing the Red Army to retreat into the mountains to avoid destruction.

Nan Batian's escape through the tunnel allows him to report to authorities, setting this escalation in motion.

Wu Qionghua is motivated to join after being rescued from oppression and abuse in Nan Batian's household. She seeks to change her own fate and fight against the feudal landlords who oppressed her. Her desire for liberation and to help others in similar situations drives her to seek out the Red Detachment.

Her fierce resolve is revealed at the moment of her liberation when her name is disclosed.

After the KMT brigade withdraws from the island, Wu Qionghua organizes a decisive operation against Nan Batian's forces. Under her leadership as the new CCP representative, the Red Detachment reoccupies Batian's fort and captures him. Nan Batian is then brought to justice and sentenced to death, ending his threat.

Fu Honglian is another young woman who joins the Red Detachment alongside Wu Qionghua. She rejects a life of widowhood and chooses to become a soldier instead, seeking personal liberation similar to Qionghua. Both women travel together to the encampment, establishing their parallel journeys.

In the second operation, Hong Changqing and Wu Qionghua disguise themselves once again as a businessman and his maidservant, using the same ruse that freed Qionghua originally. With help from someone inside the fort, they gain entry and gather crucial intelligence, enabling the Red Detachment to launch a coordinated attack from within.

The initial rescue mission established this disguise as an effective cover.

The peasant movements grow significantly throughout the story as the revolutionary cause gains support among the rural population. Wu Qionghua actively participates in these movements after the fort operation, which helps expand the Red Detachment's influence and base of support. These movements represent the broader popular uprising against feudal oppression.

The movie opens with the CPC pushing anti-feudal ideas on Hainan Island, establishing this grassroots foundation.
